lancer gear changing thing

excuse my poor automotive vocabulary, but I have a problem as we just bought my little sister a 2004 lancer but at night the gear changing thing ( dont know what its called, the thing for reverse, neutral, drive) doesn't light up or anything, making it impossible to see what drive your on without having it well memorized. Would anyone happen to know if this is suppose to be this way or is there a light we can switch on.. or what?! Thanks!

Wasnt there a light before? It may be as simple as a burnt out bulb?

We have no idea if it use to light up, theres no icon for it on the odometer area, just signs right on actually drive changing thing. Is there even a bulb in there?

yes, it lights up. maybe just a burnt out bulb.

Does the rest of the dash light up? if it does it's probably a bulb.

button in, move it out of park, let button go, push it all the way down is drive, up is neutral up on more park, should be fairly easy to memorize
