Default FRS Radios... what kinds to people have?

I'm thinking about getting one... what does everyone out there use? And are all the different manufacturers compatible? I'm pretty sure they are since they all use the FRS band. But some are really cheap like 2 for 60 bucks.. I was wondering if those are any good or worth getting.

The CSCC uses the Cobra FRS radios. I'm not sure what models, but they are a couple of years old now. They work pretty well for what we need them for actually. The range isn't fantastic but I mean we aren't talking about a CB anyway. I've used the motorola ones as well, the range seems to be a little better, but thats about it really. In terms of compatibility, it shouldn't matter what type of FRS you have as long as it supports the standard channels and subchanels.

I like the Cobra FRS more than the Motorola's.

It really doesn't matter which one you get. They all operate on the same channels. Roughly the same distance.

Cobra Talk 2 at the time had the best range on a full battery (that's the key to the FRS's). The distance wasn't anything to brag about over the Motorola... Then again the Cobra unit was Cheaper

What you do want to make sure is that you have the sub channels as well. It makes it harder for people to pick up the channel. Like say a cruise when you don't want every tom dick and harry to pick up and listen.

Motorola T6200, as Peter says... Go Motorola or Go Home! haha j/k. Works really well! Battery life is quite good too, I've had mine on since I bought it and its still just one notch down on the battery level.

Generally buck for buck the motorolas are twice the price of the cobras which are not as nice, but often suffice.

I believe motorolas/cobras work with each other (frequency wise)
I was told that General Electrics have their own dedicated frequencies, so only GE's can talk to GE's.

Going around the city with some cobras, you do bump into some people for sure. What struck me as odd is everywhere you pick a pair up, they ask "what will you be using these for?"

What happens when you don't have sub-channels?

Then you only have 14 channels to work with, and you won't be able to talk to the guys with the one with sub-channels. With sub-channels, you got 532 different combinations.

BTW, I have the Motorola T289.

There's this guy at london drugs that said if I buy 2 of the blue panasonic ones he'll sell them to me for $49.99 each. That's the sale price they were at a month ago.

I find that they get scratched easily though so I might want to get the motorola ones. If they sell them in packs of 2 we should hook up at future slut err shop and get them.

I say motorola. Well it doesn't matter who I go halfies with, as long as I get one! Or you could get Ludelvr to make you one.
