    Default Garage door repair

This morning my roommate tried to open the garage door with the opener and one of the cables snapped. Therefore, one side of the door is higer than the other and it's stuck at the slightly open stage.

Can you recommend a door repair guy? I phoned one place and cost is $138/hr minimum 2 hours. I told them I would call back on Monday for the non-prime rate of $68/hr.

A matter of changing out the old wire, hook the wire in and realign door. Don't want to try myself in case door falls on the car.

I don't think its that simple.

The wires / cables are usually hooked to some sort of torsion system that helps raise the door when opening.

If one of the cables has snapped the torsion spring may have to be reset.

    Pretty dangerous stuff.

I had a buddy of mine lose half a finger by not paying attention to his.

He should be proud, thats a lot higher than most Nufys.

    haha

    just jokes! :P

Anyways, it's pretty dangerous. 2 winters ago the massive spring that runs parallel to the door frame snapped and caused quite a ruckus. Winding that thing back up, I thought for sure I would die. My life and limb > $68/h.

I did it myself a couple of years ago by ordering a new spring from Creative Door Sevices down in the NE.

If your cable snapped, it's not too bad to fix. First, find 2 rods that will fit securely through the hole at the end where you adjust the spring.

Then with all your might, hold down the rod and loosen up the bolt that holds that spring. Slowly unwind by alternating between the two rods. You will have to do this twice, on the two springs.

After the tension of the spring is gone, then you can access the wire cables no problem.

Just be careful and take your time.

This happened to me last week.

Call Fast Inc 403-202-5555 they came the same day and replaced my cables, realigned the door and oiled up everything for $150

I've used Glenmore Door before. I was happy with their service.

That was our house builder's company on the garage door sticker (20 years ago), called them up 1 year ago, one of the guys who came out still remembered doing work when the neighbourhood was new. (meaning been with the company long = happy employee/owner)

Good to know. As I am working out of town my roommate phoned I think Calgary Overhead Doors. Will see how that goes.
