stick with the 85-92 engines because of the forged pistons. 85 is carburated, 86 pistons have no valve reliefs (p/v interference when using almost all aftermarket camshafts), and 86-88 have speed density (vs mass air on 89+), which will not work well with highly modified engines.
SO, i would use 89-92....which weigh 536.9lbs as a complete engine assy.
Whatcha building there????
Ford tuning guy...
I have too much respect for the idea of God to make it responsible for such an absurd world.

And '86 and prior have shit heads.
Another question, how heavy is the diff, the tranni, and do any have LSD?
How much power can the stock engine take? say the 89-92 years.
How much does a good engine go for or are these so common that people just buy re-built crate engines?
I just have a project I'm thinking about doing. Going to wiegh the costs.
Actually the rear end would be a thunderbird, not mustang.
K looked into the costs, never mind....
The idea was a monster miata but people want big doe for the kits...so na.
But it's good to learn a bit about the 5.0's.
Why go for a kit? There is a lot of information available on engine swaps, they are not that difficult as long as you are prepared for some frustration and the time it will take to figure out some of the issues. I saw a very nice 5.0L Miata with a centrifigal blower a few weeks ago, it is tight but not bad.
My car is a 5.0L Volvo, although kits are available I didn't bother with a kit, it took my 125 hour for the conversion.

Karl from Speedville was telling me about that he was thinking about doing the 5.0 volvo many moons ago.
Looks good.
