Default LF: good but easy hiking trails

I dont hike much but was thinking of doing a day-hike later on this week and was just wondering if any of the nature-nuts can recommend a good trail that is really scenic but easy enough for a beginner and a dog...

banff? or k-country (so i dont have to pay the fee and closer)?

    thx

Grassi Lakes has 2 path, easy and more complicated. Nice lakes at the end. Not sure if you looking at something long or short, but this one is about 45 min one way, and is fairly easy, went on my first date with my fiance there

I think only some of the lower level hikes in Banff are open at the moment. Last I checked on the Parks Canada website, a lot of the trails in the park are in poor condition due to ice/slush. It's also good to check their website before you hike, especially if you plan on bringing a dog out with you (for restrictions/animal activity).
Later on in the summer the hike up to Larch Valley/Sentinel Pass at Moraine Lake is easy and has good scenery. Plain of Six Glaciers via Mirror Lake is easy but crowded close to the teahouses, you do get amazing views of Lake Louise though. Stanley Glacier in Kootenay is super easy and has some interesting growth now due to the large fire a few years back. If you're willing to drive a bit more, the hikes off the Icefields Parkway are spectacular.

Across the road from Elbow falls rest area are a few different trails. Cant remember the names but different levels of difficulty, mainly easy ones though. Its not even too far to stray from Calgary.

Troll falls is my favorite. Up behind the first fall is a steep hill. It's a bitch for a few mins, but after that it's an easy hike, and completely amazing.

K-country . We found it online one day and went for an afternoon with some friends. loved it so much we hauled some of the photo guys out with us a few weekends later. Do a search in the photo section, there's a thread with all of our pictures from the day.

Powderface/Prairie Creek Trail. It's a 21km loop if you do the short one, long loop is about 40km. Never hiked it, only biked so I didn't pay too much attention to the view, nice trail though.

along the same stretch of highway you can do:

Moose Mountain, park at the top and hike over to the fire lookout station for a decent view
Ing's mine, aka the ice caves. It's probably 30-45 minutes along a gravel road before you start going uphill though, round trip is in the neighborhood of 3 hours. Depending if you want to explore the cave or not, bring a flashlight/headlamp.

So far for closer, beginner trails i have:

    Grassi Lakes
    Troll Falls
    Powderface/Prairie Creek Trail

On second thought,...maybe i should wait a few weeks...all trail reports are muddy and snowy..!

    Some old pics.

    TROLL FALLS

    Still frozen in April.

Very close to Nakiska. We rode in instead of hiking.

    GRASSI LAKES

    Taken during a warm December.

    Lots of ice.

    View from above the lakes.

I usually just drive out to the mountains, park somewhere that looks nice, and hike randomly in the forest. Paths are boring, bushwhacking FTW!

Anyone know what Johnson Canyon will be like this weekend? We were thinking of taking our two kids (3 & 7 years old) up there, but if it's snow covered or slushy we might do something else.

Calgary is so much like an iphone: iCalgary - There's a bylaw for that.

I'd be all over hiking this week. Definately not too wet, and even if its a little sloppy, so you get wet for a bit- no big deal.
