Default What's the strongest most effective allergy medication...

I am sick of allergies. I have taken Claritin, Allegra, Aerius, Benadryl. Whatever they have I've taken it. I'm getting sick of having allergies that are not affected in any way whatsoever by medicine. Is there a prescription strenght allergy medicine my doctor could prescribe??? I mean allergies can be so debilitating and it's just the most draining thing ever to have to deal with this shit all summer.

Let's have it opinions on whats good non-prescription and what doctors could prescribe I could ask for. Nose sprays are useless since my nose is so congested I doubt I'd be able to get the spray all the way to my sinuses haha.

if it is by prescription you have to go to a doctor anyways.

I think that is your only option.

Claritin works for me but none of the others

no i know i need my doctor for a prescription I'm just asking if anyone on here has any experience with anything prescribed since I've always tried over the counter stuff so far. And well with no success pretty much. I'm wondering if it's worth the visit to the doctor.

I also have really horrible allergies, all seasons type. Doesn't matter if its winter or spring/summer I will have a congested nose and red-itchy eyes, ezcema etc. I went to the doctor and he prescribed me Allergra - 12 hour and also 24 Hour strength, they worked for about 2weeks, I felt GREAT!... I thought Hey, I can take these for the rest of my life and never deal with allergies again, thats where I was completely wrong.

Apparently the body also produces anti-histamin but not enough to counteract the effects of histamine. So if you keep on taking these medications you will feel the effects once you stop them or once they lose their effect, 10 times worse. (they work the same way decongestants work for the sinuses)

Doctor recommends the best way to rid of allergies is go to the source. Your Diet, if you eat right, excercise and other healthy stuff, your allergies will eventually go away.

Ive been doing most of those things mentioned above and my allergies have gotten much better.

source: family doctor, pharmacist, personal experience.

I get allergy shots, and they seem to help my seasonal allergies quite a bit, this time of year I sometimes need to take an aerius or something too otherwise i sneeze quite a bit, but overall the shots help a lot, I used to have the watering eyes, unbearable sneezing etc. so bad I could barely function without some sort of allergy pill, eye drops, and nasal spray lol.... now I just need a pill once in a while and a shot once a month.

Reactine Extra Strength - 24 hour relief.

Also try that with a nasal spray like Flonaise or Nasocort.

Allergy med in combination with a nasal spray will work the best. The nasal sprays are by prescription only though.

I did the pre-seasonal alergy shots for six or seven years in a row. They totally helped, but I still need to be on something once-a-day to keep it in check. Right now, I'm on aireus, and i've used reactine, claritin and all the rest.

The best thing for me is regular old benydril, but it makes me really dopey, so i can't use it every day.
There are some doctors that will prescribe a cortizone shot, but depending on who you ask, that may be just a placebo.

The Flonaise worked great for my wife over the last few years but I think it's prescription.

Having really bad allergies and none of the pills working, I've gone to see a specialist and was told that I should try either shots, or at least try one of those Hepa allergy air filters.

For those who took the shots, do most of you have any problems regarding allergies for that month?

I remember a post by rage2 mentioning how great it worked for him but cant find it. Anyone have any experience with those air filters?

I was looking along the lines of one of these as they all have pretty good reviews online:

I have bad alergies to dust and fucking pollin. I have tried everything and found that the only stuff that actually worked was Reactin. 10mg. That stuff is gold.

yeah I feel you I'm allergic to everything it seems from dust to pollen to pets. As a dog lover thats not an option so I'm trying to figure out something.

I know rage mentioned he has bad allergies and a golden retreiver so I'm really curious what kind of air purifier he used (unless I"m remembering wrong).

Reactine extra strength works great for me, only have to take 1 a day.

I use to take Benadryl and that was complete crap.

Step one is to hit up the doc for allergy tests, they stab your arm repeatedly and then lather on peanut butter, rub some grass on it and shit, then if you're still breathing in 30mins they have a look at what is most swollen. (exaggerating a bit, it's painless and a wee bit more scientific). Makes it a lot easier to avoid symptoms when you know what triggers them, no? You might be a celiac (gluten: wheat) or tomatoes or just have seasonal pollen type shit. I'm allergic to grass, pine and certain flower pollen. So I don't mow the lawn, don't play or park near pine trees and avoid sniffing (or buying! hah) flowers... haven't taken Claritin or any of that shit in years.

Anyway good luck and I sincerely hope you grow out of them, allergies are teh sux.

Oh and btw, BC will probably be much, much worse... unless you live in Hongcouver where it rains all the time and keeps the pollens down... but yeah, dry, hot, dusty, lots of greenery... lived there for a few years and there was just a couple weeks of the year where I could finish a box of Kleenex in a day haha, and my allergies aren't even that bad anymo.
