How many days does it take to clear a cheque I deposited on Saturday? I'll be heading to TD Bank after work tomorrow but just wanted to know before hand.

Depends on your account, how long you been with TD bank etc.
It could range from none to 5 business days depending on your status.
For me, the first 500 I can withdraw but if its more then they hold the amount above 500 for two days.
^^^ max 5 business days..
Just deposit it through the teller. If the cheque was written on a TD account they will cash it straight away if the person has enough money in the account. If its not from TD, it's the teller's call and it will depend on a number of factors like how much money is in your account, account history etc. Most of the time they will cash it straight away though.Originally posted by Diesel2005

TECHNICALLY they say 5 business days, but say if you deposited on saturday... you wont get it till next monday. the process is long and gay. its mon- friday, but then the next monday after for them to RELEASE the funds.Originally posted by supra_11

but yes it also depends on your account.
sorry was this through a machine or the teller?
the teller usually puts it through unless if you're in debt / have no money in your account. BUT also at td, on their screens it says how much they should hold, or if its a full release.
it can be weeks if it is an out of country cheque...Originally posted by supra_11

If you are a good customer with that bank, it's possible to have them shorten or remove that delay. last time I was in at ATB, which I've been banking at for years, some manager guy gave me his card and told me if I called him, he'd put any cheque through right away. They already process anything under $2000 right away for me.

That IS 5 business days. 2 of those days are weekends, so TECHNICALLY, they ARE correct on that matter, they just make it sound less of a pain-in-the-ass wait.Originally posted by l/l/rX

Anyways, if you go through a teller, and if the cheque isn't a huge amount or an unfamiliar cheque, they shouldn't hold it. If you deposit through a machine, then yes, they will hold it and it will clear on the 2nd Monday after.
Ask about desposit programs. My program through TD is if you deposit a check through a machine, you're able to pull out up to $1000 right away, and the rest of the check is on hold until 5 business days later.

I deposited it through machine. The cheque was $500-$1000.
I have another to deposit today after work, so it's better not to use the machines? I kinda need the money this weekend.
Why don't you just ask the bank?

do not use the machines, go into the bank and talk to them, machines will automatically hold it up to your limit in case your stuffing blank envelopes in it
Thats not true. I can deposit a $20K cheque through the machine and do whatever I please with that money right away.Originally posted by 2002civic

It all depends on what you have arranged with your bank.

Yeah well they make an exception for you because they know you need that 20K to buy your lunch.
The average person with decent credit and who has been with a bank for at least 3 years will usually get between $1000 and $2500 instant release. Sometimes you can get more if you ask or are high roller.
cause i'm at work right now, heading there after workOriginally posted by ~Leah~

pick up the phone.
i've always had them cash all my cheques instantly. i've never had to wait. but i've been with td since i was a child haha. i also have my visa, and loan and everything through them so they know i am reputable
i've never had anything held with any banks except TD
a couple years ago, I was paid out for my car being written off (cheque was from ING).. TD would not cash the cheque, they wanted a 10 day hold on it. me and my mom then went down the street to her brand new Scotia bank account and cashed it on the spot.
I had been a customer with TDCanadaTrust for over 10 years.
I'm now with ATB and have yet to have anything held, no matter how much or little is in my account or no matter how much i deposit at one time
Sig nuked by mod.
ive been with TD for 12+ yrs now, never had one problem with them.
Never hold my cheques. I can deposit it into a green machine and take it out right away.
But i was with 1st calgary for a bit, and they would do the whole 5 business day bs thing.
They're most likely holding but you haven't noticed. It depends on the total amounts that you deposit via the ATM in a given week. I just spoke with the bank as this happened to me this week. It's always been there, but first time I've noticed it due to deposits and amounts.Originally posted by swak

Never do it thru the machine if you need it in a hurry.
Bring it in person. Deposit via machine will take an extra step (and possibly an extra night) to verify that you didn't deposit an empty envelope.
