Dry wall taping

Any one here do dry wall taping? I have a garage that is dry walled but not taped. I want to paint it this year. Please let me know or pm me if you do. thanks.

it really isn't all that hard, buy a do it yourself book, and you can save a lot of money...

Not worth paying someone 2 drywall a garage for you...

Taping is easy. It's the god damn sanding that sucks ass.

But in the Garage, I'd say it doesn't matter nearly as much, so I would do it yourself.

If your good at taping/mudding your sanding is really really easy.

buy quality drywal mud,.. not the cheap all purpose no-name stuff in white buckets

westrock - easy sanding
synko - easy application


these come premixed,.. but use a 1/2" drill and a whip and "fluff" them up with a few to 6 cups or more of water till there is a consitence you like.

fyi: the more water you use,.. the more it will shrink back


sand between coats

3 coats

first coat - 8" - feather the edges
sand
second coat - 12" - feather edges
sand
third coat (make it the mudd more thinner/soupy) - overlap 12" on top and bottom to make an approx 18" skim coat - put on/take off - just to fill all the imperfections
finish sand with 150-180 grit paper-back sand paper on a sanding pole or hand sander,.. never use the "mesh" sand paper - never use an electric sander, best results are done by hand.

wear a mask - the dust will make your beathing shallow

if you are skilled enough you can do a 4th skim with a well sharpened/used 12" trowel dipped in hot water to give you a virtually sandless taping job

rookies - use knives and a metal mud pan, i suggest a 6-8" for laying the tape, 8-10" for first coat, 12" for 2nd and 3rd coat

skilled people - learn to use a trowel,.. this will give you the skills to do stucco, concrete finishing, ceiling textures.
12" trowel + a good magnesium hawk, 6" knife for laying tape, 4" for inside corners

Tip for all:

inside corners - put mud on both sides - lay tape - flaten and wipe - coat only 1 side nice and as smooth as you can in the least amount of strokes - feather edge - wait till its fully dry (1-2days) then coat the other side

Outside corners:

rookies - use plastic corner beads and spray adhesive, either 3M 888 (or something like that) or Trimtex 847 - spray corner, spray bead, wait 10 secs, apply, coast 3 times over 3 days

skilled - use paper covered metal bead, put mud on both sides with 6" knife, apply bead, wipe flat paper and remove excess mud, then make your fist coat rght away with 12" trowel only about 8" wide tho, wait till dries (1-2 days) sand and coat again, but go 10-12" wide, next day, sand and skim coat

round bead you need to do 4 coats

I used to professionally tape houses for years - no I won't do taping anymore,.. i hung up my tools, I sell houses now.
