Default Canadian Government to Check iPods and Other Devices for Copyright Infringment

    http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/s...f-47f6fc96ce5e

The deal would create a international regulator that could turn border guards and other public security personnel into copyright police. The security officials would be charged with checking laptops, iPods and even cellular phones for content that "infringes" on copyright laws, such as ripped CDs and movies.
    Wow...

So a border guard would be legally allowed into my personal computer, with confidential files, and personal files, because hollywood is full of overpaid wankers?

    Nice.

What I want to know is where the pressure comes from? Does hollywood put pressure on the country to do this, or they wont make movies here? Why would the few people in gov't give a rats ass what I have on an ipod otherwise?

No, they don't need a warrant. If you have PC going into the states, they already can seize and search it's contents. I believe your also required to submit any encryption keys as well.

No, because it is when you're crossing the border, they can legally search you. I read an article a couple weeks ago saying that, (if I remember correctly) US customs officials can search your laptop when crossing the border as well.

Edit - I see Crymson beat me to it.

Yup. If they suspect you have child porn or information against the country, they can and they will seize it.

Alot of corporations have stopped allowing corporate laptops to travel, specifically because they don't just "look" and let you go, they will copy the entire HDD and send you on your way.

there has to be some loophole in the copying the hard drive
Some mastercam files are worth millions - they can just take them at their discretion and sell them - technically

Just create a restore point, then delete everything. Get to your destination, revert back to save point.

But ya, I crossed the border last August and they were convinced I was carrying drugs or something. They took my car into a garage and put me into a separate room. They took my keys, receipts, Blackberry and pulled everything out of my car before putting the dogs to it. I didn't have my laptop at the time but they would have taken that as well. Then they knocked on the panels to make sure they weren't solid, held me for 4 hours, fingerprinted me and let me go.

Can I just ask, how would they know whether the song on your iPod is bought or downloaded?

Edit: What if you bought the CD and ripped your songs onto your iPod from it? That's not illegal is it?
