Bump from the dead - Does anyone with a heads up display have 3M on their windshield? Or are you better off to just get windshield insurance?

I didn't even know 3M for a windshield existed till i test drove a G70 a few years back. Considering for my car before i get a chip.

Price in cost to do this vs windshield replacement.

That being said, I've some how managed to only replace 2 windshields in my driving career.

How did you manage that outside of simply not driving a lot? I consider myself pretty good at avoiding cracks and chips but I average about two a decade despite barely using Deerfoot trail.

I'm one of those nuts where if I get a chip on a highway trip, I call the glass shop in the next major center I'll be passing through and stop right away to get it filled.

Yeah, I've never understood how people go through so much glass. Mind you I purposely avoid the cheap shitty glass everyone raves about because it's inexpensive.

I'll take the $300 glass that lasts 6 years over the $200 glass that gets replaced annually "bEcAuSe DeErFoOt".

To be fair, I got a $160 windshield installed in my '03 2500HD and that lasted me 3.5 years and never ended up cracking. On that glass, I paid for 1 professional chip fix and fixed about 2-3 others myself using the amazon/partsource DIY kits. TBH those DIY kits are just as good as the prof. fixes a lot of the time. But I agree the typical cheapest glass is not as good as OEM like my pilkington etc. ones

Depending on the vehicle, the "OEM" glass is either a) non-existent, b) 3x the price, c) wavy as shit same as cheapass aftermarket. If the glass was only 50% more and it was actually better, I think more people would use it. I sure would.

The real "value" move here is when you get a crack that is not directly in the drivers vision, DO NOT REPLACE THE WINDOW. That crack acts as a stress relief and you can often drive for years without further issues. Need to be a bit lucky with that first crack.

For me it’s not just about the cracks, it’s the pitting from daily use and how much glare it produces driving towards the sun. I’ve had cars where it was so bad I had the glass replaced with not a single chip.

That happened with my Audi. 7 years of driving Deerfoot and not one chip or crack, but so pitted that I had to replace it.

Just got exoshield done $500 but it’s on a non daily so probably doesn’t apply and I don’t drive it in the rain cuz you don’t drive Hondas in the rain.

I’ve had a cracked windshield on every car but so far they have always been out of the driver side view. They are always on passenger side top or bottom so I just ignore it lol

But can someone educate my dumb ass lol why is it you just get 1 nice crack line and it stays like that? You never get a second one lol or does the second one result in the whole thing exploding and you don’t want it. No I won’t google. I wanna hear it from you guys.

The first crack MIGHT be relieving some stress that is in the material from the manufacturing process and after that the layer of glass can flex and move a microscopic amount and that prevents stress building up elsewhere? That's what I figure is happening, and I've given it some thought. Always seems that if you get one large crack long the bottom, you won't get anymore.

    Nice!

I'm still waiting for a stupid Honda windshield for my stupid Honda so I can film the next windshield for dry weather driving.

Pro tip, pre-crack the windshield at the base where it's not visible and you won't get cracks anywhere else.
