Default Preventing a windshield from cracking or replacement windshield materials?

Is there any type of 3m film or whatever that you can put on your windshield to protect it from cracking/chipping?

Also, can you buy a windshield made of plexiglass or lexan or something that doesn't crack?

i dont think theres anything you can get.
windshields are made specially so that they dont shatter inward, rather outward. i dont think id want to mess with that.

just make sure you keep all ur chips fixed and i think thats the best you can do.

The only way to prevent ur windshield from chipping or cracking in Calgary is to not drive...thats the only solution

Security film looks interesting, but dunno where you could get it done locally.

I know there's a place in Edmonton that does the security film (I heard a commercial while I was up there picking up materials for the glass shop I work at).
The security film would work like the layer of vinyl that's already in the laminated glass the windshield is made from- it would keep it from shattering, but not from breaking.

Plexi wouldn't work, it's no better than regular glass for strength, really...lexan, on the other hand, would be better. Not DOT-approved, though, and would be inpossible to keep clean without becoming a hazy mess of scratches in no time at all.

Stick with laminated glass, and like Dest said, get chips fixed so they don't spread.

the second you get a chip/spider knick fill it, you let it go in a city with bs varying weather like ours it will crack definetely.

i let 2 chips get away for a week and my window looks like stained glass.. minus the colour stains

I did some research and there are a few places in the US that put this film on top of your windshield, but I couldn't find any dealers in Canada. I watched a video of the process and yeah, it just seems like that way they do window tinting, a solution of soap and water and a squeegee.

Is it on the outside? That would be useless, it would be chipped to shit in no time, and hazy and no good to see thru.

these films or whatever are supposed to harden and have a hard surface and not be damaged by wipers or anything.

There is a product we are just starting to sell (I think) and it basically just coats the windshield.
It's supposed to make your windshield 5x stronger and chip/crack resistant.
The company that does this gaurantees your winshield won't get any chips or they will replace it free of charge.

I will look into see if we are selling it yet and post more info.

We are the few people that stock windshield film. It has been tested to stop minor rock chips and prevent windshield from cracking when hit by rocks unless it's really huge. But even then it'll absorb most of the damage in the film and leave very little when removed off the windshield. The price of most windshield film is cheaper than the cost of a new windshield. This way it's more cost efficient and also you can remove and apply a new windshield film after a year or so depending on how much you drive and condition.
