Default Ford to convert some truck plants to make Euro Ford vehicles for sale here

Alan Mulally, Ford's CEO has taken some very drastic and bold action very recently, going as far as overriding the veto of large swaths of Ford's upper management.

Because US the dollar has fallen hopelessly against world currencies, agreements won from the UAW, and the fact that even the CEO realizes most all the good stuff from Ford is made overseas, money is being sent to revamp factories to make most replacements for Ford's current lineup of cars based on vehicles from overseas.

For starters, the plant making the Econoline van will be redone to make the Transit van from Ford of Europe. Luisville will be converted to produce "unibody cars and crossovers".

The Fusion will be replaced by a US built version of the next Mondeo.

We'll be making the European version of the Ford Focus here in late 2010 for the 2011 model year.

Seems the only vehicles to be sourced here will be Ford's upcoming RWD chassis (which is being developed jointly with Ford Australia, though Ford North America is heading it) and assorted SUVs and trucks.

Adding to the story, Ford seems to be backing out of Volvo based vehicles. Ford's RWD replacements for the Crown Victoria will be close to the same size as the Taurus and MKS. Next year's Taurus resembles the current Mondeo (creating a link for the Mondeo-based sedan to be called Taurus while the Fusion name is cancelled??).

The new F100 mid-sized pickup will be made in the Wayne Michigan plant that currently makes F150s.

If this is true then it's stupid. No one here wants the European Focus. Everyone here loves the NA Focus and it is selling like hotcakes. Focus sales have already overtaken Cobalt sales. All the people on the internet whining about it will all buy Civics anyway so it makes no difference.

What would be the point of bringing the Mondeo here? It doesn't do anything the Fusion doesn't already do, they are exactly the same size and in NA will probably have exactly the same engine. Even if they price it the same as the Fusion no one here will buy it.

If Ford can keep the quality high, they are going to make a million billion dollars. The euro Focus is so good compared to what we have here.

Why doesn't Honda bring the Euro Civic over then? Why don't all the Japanese car makers bring over their m4d tyte JDM cars over here? Because they know better. This isn't Europe or Japan, no one here wants those cars.

Thats because of the 'big three's' N/A marketing strategy.

They marketed SUVs for over a decade with success, had they stuck to cars, things wouldve undoubtedly been different.

Proof? I thought that the focus sales hadn't recovered from the first gen.

Too much to ask, I think, that they bring the AU Fords... that's kinda going the opposite direction of their gas-saving intentions.

You can already buy the European Focus here. They are selling just as well as the Saturn Astra (read: no one wants them). I guess it just doesn't have that Blue Oval prestige?

It's not as if the Japanese are any different. Pretty much everything Honda/Toyota sells in North America except for niche and luxury models is made in North America, FOR North America. Everyone knows this and one would HOPE Alan Mullaly knows this too. The Japanese companies are just better at making North American cars. They need to be, because the Japanese car market is going down the tubes fast and they can't compete with the Europeans in Europe. North America is their best market.
