    Default Stelmech bans cheap drinks, limits happy hours

    http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...1-e837018cd2b7

    Sounds like the gist of it is:

    - No Happy Hour past 8PM.

    Minimum drink prices:
    - $2.75 per 12-ounce bottle or can of beer and coolers;
    - $3.20 per 20-ounce pint of draught beer (or 16 cents an ounce);
    - $2.75 per one ounce of spirits and liqueurs; and
    - $1.75 per five-ounce glass of wine (or 35 cents an ounce).

    I don't think it'll do much other than kill 25c draft night at Cowboys... when has anyone ever seen drink prices that cheap in Calgary anyway?

    Where has anyone seen $3.20 for a pint?

    How about instead of bringing in this stupid BS law, they just have a gladiator style arena in every club so if a couple of idiots want to drop the gloves, everyone else can watch and place bets? They should do that for the gang fights as well.
    In reference to Rob Anders:

    that'll ruin $7 triple night on thursdays at roadhouse which is a big hit.

    that'll also kill wild gingers 5 oz martinis for $10

    cowboys 0.25 draft on thursday, $1 highballs on wednesday.

    whiskeys 0.25 draft on thursday.

    there are TONS of drink specials all around calgary.

    i know this one irish pub across from earls tin palace, is DIRT CHEAP during happy hour. it was $3 per pint and and $3 for some certain amount of wine.

    not going to stop the fighting imo, and personally i think there will be an increase in drunk driving. more people getting blitzed at home before hitting the bars.

    We've had minimum pricing for years now over here and let me tell you, it didn't make anyone drink any less in any way. It didn't solve any problems with rowdy bars/neighborhoods. It just makes you spend more money.

    I wouldn't be suprised if your hospitality industry or whatever was lobbying for it behind the scenes, it's just a good way to weed out the high-volume undercutters and then everyone makes more money on their cheap night because all the sudden $2.75 highballs are the best deal in town instead of $1 ones. The crowds remain the same but the profits go waaaaay up.

    Once again, the nanny-state to the rescue.

    What the government should be doing is eliminating mandatory closing times if they want to reduce bar violence.

    So often, bar patrons all leave the bar at the same time after last call, and, especially in the summer, that's when the bad behavior starts. This huge crush of people are mostly drunk, all kicked into the street at the same time, and can't easily get home, because all the cabs are suddenly swamped. So it's actually the government regulation that causes the problem. If they eliminated closing times, bars would all pick their own time, and these staggered last calls would solve a significant number of problems.

    But eliminating minimum drink prices? Isn't that just a guarantee that anybody who can't afford the new prices just buys a mickey? I don't think people will actually drink less, and when the violence doesn't decrease, count on Red Stelmach to come up with some new BS regulations for us.

    Gee, how convenient. Making minimum prices on something that's taxed all to hell in the first place.

    As stated above, it isnt just cowboys, there are places everywhere that will be affected.
    And it is true, people will go out for $7.00 schooners or 0.25 draft night and show up sober knowing that they can feel a little wobbly for cheap. Now people will drink at home and drive down...after all, when was the last time you saw a check stop at 9pm at night? At least ive never seen it.

    Bad move by the govt,
    Anyone wanna lobby for them to get involved into sports now??

    Manitoba did this back in 2000 and after that, we still drank lots and there were still the same # of bar fights, etc. According to a friend that just moved here, she said a number of bars/clubs went under because of the violence in the past couple of months.

    403Gemini,

    Please forgive my last post. I am currently working, and i did not realize that every post that i wrote was equal to submitting an essay to my professor. I mentioned the fact that i knew management only to help others who dislike Cowboys, see why i may enjoy it more then them. In no way was i trying act superior. Once again, please forgive my insolence.

    Sincerely,

    teg_boya
