For a mid range, all round hobby grade truck for most people, I would look at the Stampede 4x4, but it doubles your budget.

    http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/...2942c07afben02

But that truck, you realistically don't really need to upgrade anything, unless you want to be cool and put aluminium parts on that cost a fortune, but most of the time don't add a lick of performance or durability.

Remember, plastic will flex, aluminium will break.

In Calgary I always try to hit up action hobby first, then model land, then pm hobby, and then Best Buy if it is convenient.

Action hobby is the best hobby shop in town in my opinion.

I always recommend 2 batteries, charge one while you use the other

Action Hobby is the only RC shop for Calgary. PM is okay if you like to look at empty hooks where the item you wanted should be.

Any suggestions for online stores for buying cars? I'm looking to get into this as well but have no shops where I live other than Best Buy. I looked on Amazon for the Traxxas summit (for example) and it was way more on there than Best Buy who have it for $650.

With no local shops will I have to worry about breaking parts and having significant downtime? Or are they built pretty solid?

Really appreciate this thread and the advice

good online shops are Towerhobbies.com or horizonhobby.com for your every day bashers and buying ready to run vehicles.

RC4WD.com and asiatees.com for custom parts and upgrades.

Integy.com also makes quite a lot of aluminium upgrades for all the most popular lines.

Hell, Walmart in the states is even selling Axial products now.

and a billion and one other sites.

If there are no hobby shops near you, but there is a bestbuy, stick to the traxxas brand, as bestbuy does carry traxxas, so you can still pick up spares if you break something. If you don't mind shipping times, then not having a local hobby shop isn't an issue.

Hobby grade RC vehicles are pretty robust, but most parts are plastic. They can take a hell of a beating and keep on trucking, but something will always break eventually. Having said that, you can predict which parts will break the most on your vehicle. Buying a few sets of A-arms and hub carriers are always a good idea, as is buying extra spur and pinion gears.

If you want to pick out a vehicle that you like, I have no problem suggesting what spare parts to stock up on, and give you some advice. Or I can even suggest a vehicle to pick up in your budget if you give me some ideas on what you want the truck/car to do.

I also want to stress something.

If you take my advice and get yourself a RC vehicle and get a LiPO battery,

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, do your research and understand them. Make sure you have a charger that is specifically made to charge a LiPO battery. Read and understand the safety instructions too.

LiPO batteries are AWESOME! but, they also can be dangerous if not handled properly.

Spikers, any reason you suggest amazon instead of hobbyking for batteries? The lipo you posted is hella expensive in comparison. And I know from experience that the hobbyking ones perform awesome.

I've been eyeing up those Wraith's for a while now, what would I be looking at cost wise for a setup from scratch?

I suggest amazon to newbies that can't get to a hobby store just because it already comes with your connectors already done, shorter shipping (usually), plus a few other reasons. Once someone is knowledgeable, I point out hobbyking if they haven't found it already.

Wraiths are pretty awesome all around. setups from scratch can be like $550 for a full Ready to Run (RTR) one, $750-800 for a Kit version with good electronics and some bomb proof upgrades), and then after that, the sky is the limit for upgrades.

Plus add another $150 to those to add a couple batteries and a charger.

Personally, I say getting a RTR wraith is a good bet, and then upgrading stuff as you break it, or it wears out. They are pretty capable rigs out of the box.

Yeah every rig I have is well over a grand, but they can be done much cheaper. As long as you upgrade the transmission gears and steering links they are good to go for years. The upgrade bug always kicks in though.

One thing to keep in mind this time of year is lights.
