    Default Wood stoves in Calgary?

What are the guidelines to installing a wood stove in Calgary?

Are there some houses that are impossible to install one into? Situations they are forbidden?

What are the considerations/rough costs involved?

I have a brick chimney that's roughly 1.5'x1.5', in a house built in 1957. Connected to it is a NG fireplace in the basement, which may/may not be a replacement for an original fireplace.

    Thanks in Advance,
    LM

Pretty sure insurance companies hate wood burning stoves.

I didn't think you could install wood burning inside calgary limits anymore

I remember when I first moved here and was working construction in 01/02 crummy drywall touch up

Alot of the general contractors where talking about it

After that,.. all I saw were gas fireplaces installed in every house.

I don't think you can convert yours back, once it has already been converted to gas

But I don't know for sure,.. you would have to talk to someone at city hall about that

    just a heads up....

2 years ago, my parents bought a wood burning stove from sears, and paid them to deliver it and install it. everything went great, parents had a few fires in it and worked wonderfully.

then after the 5th ot 6th fire, the damn stove EXPLODED! the installers left the 2 cans of spray paint in the ash tray of the stove, and my parents had no idea that they were there. the stove stayed in 1 piece, but was no longer square, and mostly round.

The insurance company paid for all damages, and was nice enough to waive the deductable, and replaced the stove and then had to install a new hardwood floor (as there was paint all over it now. since the paint was effectively boiled, it turned it to somethink akin to a stain, and penetrated the hardwood that sanding would not remove it) and then in turn Sued Sears for it.

So if you do buy one, check that damn tray for spray paint cans!

Pulcinella's (pizzeria) uses a massive wood burning stove.
Im assuming business' may have more room to play with with this sort of thing.

Let your insurance know you are installing one and have it done professionally.

Get a City permit as well.

I put one in my old house a few years ago.

No issues with insurance or the city.

You can still get em at Crappy tire.

I may still have the card for the guys who did my chimney install if you are interested.

Wunderfire I believe they were called.

My biggest issue was that I had to install a separate source of combustion air for the stove. (4 inch concrete hole saw through my foundation at ground level)

Remember there is a difference from a wood burning fireplace/insert to wood burning stove - stove is free standing

Check out some of the fireplace places like Timberwolf, Diamond Fireplace, Mr. Fireplace or Classic Fireplace. They will usually have some sort of woodburning stove and they'll be best suited to give you an idea of what you're up against.

Calgary is so much like an iphone: iCalgary - There's a bylaw for that.

I'll see if I can find it.

As frozen rice said, check out some of those places he mentioned.

They may have different options than can let you keep your existing chimney.

Mine was an install in the first bottom level of a 4 level split.

They supplied the chimney and stove pipe.

They go outside the house and up the exterior.

If I rercall the outlet has to be higher then the peak of your house so it'll show for shure.

You may be able to do something different with your existing chimney.

    Default Update on my search.

    Here's what I've learned.

    1) According to the city of Calgary, I need a building permit to install a stove in my house.

    http://www.calgary.ca/DocGallery/BU/...fireplaces.pdf

    2) The dude at Mr. Fireplace is arrogant and obtuse, and their stoves are far more expensive than those at home depot or Can tire.

    3) Home depot has the best seletion/pricing of stoves, but I still have no clue how I'm going to get one installed once I buy it.

These guys were great shipped to my door for far less than buying in Calgary.

Look in to the pelet stoves they do not require high $ venting.

    I went with gas

Went to Fireplace Depot on memorial, and was very impressed with the service received. They were quite knowledgeable as well.

    I heartily recommend them.

    Thanks to everyone who replied.
