Default Conversion of dirt bikes for street use

What are the rules in Alberta for this? I thought it would be pretty easy to convert a 4 stroke thumper to a dual purpose.
Looking on the internet I found many kits that would (in my mind make it street legal).

    Kit

Throw in some DOT approved tires and a mirror, Presto! You have a red Wr250R? Right? Or does the VIN number make it only registrable for off road?

Wow, lots of cool bikes there. Guessing Alberta's laws are similar to Vancouver's?

Did a little big of diggin around today, went to the dealerships. This is allowed- You register it as a dual sport. Theres even a place in Calgary that makes/puts these kits on.

I give up, I've talked to everyone possible, and still no one seems to know what they are talking about. Some dealers said it was possible, some said it wasn't. Went to the registries, most of them had no clue, same with the police.

They look up the VIN number and it shows it for off road only, I was told.

Well me friend you lucky you just met the expert on legalizing a dirt bike. I read through 4 government law books captured all the nessesary information and legalized my bike. I actually think I know more than any cop that was going to pull me over.

    -------------------
    Application of Act

118(1) When a person drives an off‑highway vehicle on a highway,

    (a) the driving of that vehicle by that person on the highway is, and

    (b) the obligations on the person driving the vehicle and any person riding in or on that vehicle while the vehicle is located on the highway are,

except as otherwise provided for under this Act, subject to the other Parts of this Act in the same manner as if the off‑highway vehicle were a vehicle as defined in section 1.
    -------------------------------

Now basically what is defined in section 1 goes for all high way operated vehicles. So if you get your bike registered as a street bike, and follow section 1 rules than to me you are legal. (section 1 is huge btw).

You can legalize a bike with the registry if u have approved lights, approved signals, DOT tires, horn, reflectors and mirrors. Then you have to get an out of province and pass get the registration converted from off road to on road and bingo! Dirt bike turned road bike! Some places may want you th have a metal gas tank and will fail you, beware! That is not a requirement.

Through reading the documents. Canada follows SAE not DOT for head lights. SAE rules are on head lamps, and signals for motor vehicles. SAE do not apply for powered cycles or mopeds.

Then there are some aiming and distance of light perameters, ans positioning for all 3 light types.

The typical, signal lights have to be amber, tail lights have to be red, head lights need to white, etc.

Muffler cant be too noisy or could warrant a pull over.

Have to have reflectors in specific locations.

Have a side mirror on the left side only.

If the bike has been registered as off road it will be harder to switch it to on road, otherwise u can register any new bike as on road and suffer the penalties if you are pulled over and dont have all the goods. When pulled over, if you do not meet the proper safety regulations, which could be pretty harsh on a strait MX bike with none of the required safety items, there is a VERY LONG list of charges applicable, so I do not suggest it after reading through 4 large government documents.

I hope my extensive research clears up a lot of the confusion around this subject, as there are too many people with opinions that do not have the real facts.

And if anyone wants a street legal dirt bike buy my gas gas in my sig!
