Very genuine question... If mentally ill people who are not aware of their actions should be held criminally responsible and executed, how would you feel if it were a 4 year old who found a gun and shot and killed their sibling? Maybe they are just repeating what they saw on TV or a video game? They don't realize that death is final. That kid would not be found criminally responsible no different than someone who is a genuine schizophrenic nor should they, but by your description would you feel it reasonable for that 4 year old should be executed? Realistically it is the same situation in that both people would not be aware of their actions...

Vince Li, the man who was found not criminally responsible for beheading a man on a Greyhound bus in 2008, has been granted an absolute discharge.

The Manitoba Criminal Code Review Board ordered the discharge on Friday, saying Li, now known as Will Lee Baker, does not pose a significant safety threat.

The name change happened a while ago and pretty sure Vince wasn't even his given name anyway.

Regardless, the law is clear and since the review board found that he is not a danger, he was granted the discharge.

And i can definately say, there is no physical or medical test that can prove mental illness. Like a blood sample or mri to prove somenone is hearing voices telling them to harm themselves or others. All diagnosis are opinions based on observation and what the individual reports.

And medication for mental illness is not even well understood. They throw different compounds on an illness, then observe or rely on what the patient reports do determine effectiveness. They have almost zero how or why some of these higher end medications work.

A clever person can fool experts, because its based on observation and opinion of behaviour, rather than any real measure.

Psychology and psychiatry is a scam. Do you really believe 1/4 people have a disroder? And no condition is curable, it can only have its symproms reduce or controlled through medication.

So if it's all a scam and hocus pocus, all the statistics showing that offenders who are NCR have a lower recidivism rate than those who are put through the mainstream incarceration process are junk too?

Take cancer. Heart disease, a broken arm, an infection. Definate cause and treatment and medical definitions diagnosis defining when you are cured.

No such thing in mental illness in many many cases. Mostly based on observation, opinion.

There are older experiments where grad students were instructed how to fool doctors, and managed to get admitted for mental treatment.

And yes, their shotgun approach to medication can control some mental illness symptoms, but is relying on medication a cure?

I just don't think he should be able to live free without any obligations or restrictions. How are they to track his medicine use? How are they supposed to keep track without any legal means to force him? We are supposed to just live our lives and hope this guy stays on the mend? We are supposed to just forget that this event even happened? I really don't think an absolute discharge is in the public interest.
