Question Complience letters no longer needed?

Thought this was worth a new thread. It appears RIV has done some maneuvering so compliance letters are no longer needed. The article is about the $2000 'inspection' to get the letter but mentions BMW.

Is the compliance letter the same as recall?

Well we didn’t believe the rumor at first, so we called up the RIV today. A chap by the name of Chas confirmed to us that the RIV and Transport Canada had worked with Volvo Canada to ensure that the Compliance letter and inspection was no longer required if:

The Car that was being imported met all the criteria as spelled out in first page of the RIV admissibility lists. All that was required was the Canadian Tire Inspection. volvologo1.jpg

Therefore those Canadian Volvo dealers out West, that were charging and “gouging” $2,000 to $3,000 for a 5 minute inspection and letter , are out of business.

We understand this will hold true for BMW, Mercedes and all the rest. If you pass the Canadian Tire Inspection you do not need a Compliance letter or an inspection from the Canadian dealer!

Please be advised, make life easy on yourself, purchase a car that meets all the criteria, Factory Installed Immobilizer, Day time running lights that can not be shut off, child tether strap holders in the right positions, digital speedometer that converts from miles to kilometers or an in dash speedometer that has miles and kilometers. and any other criteria as indicated. If uncertain call the RIV first.

i contacted RiV today to check if this is actually true especially regarding imported BMW;s and the gentleman that i spoke with told me that a recall clearance letter is still needed but this does not have to come from BMW Canada and that a printed letter from the US dealer is good enough, after i got off the phone with him i contacted a BMW dealer in the states to see if they will provide that and they told me that yes they will provide that clearance letter to the title holder.

Well done! Did the dealer in the US that you talked to mention any kind of charge associated with getting the clearance letter?

nope they said free of charge but will only release this letter to the current owner of the vehicle, so in other words if you are planning on purchasing a bmw make sure you ask the douchebag selling it to see if he can get this for you

So once the title is in said owners new hand, does an instant transfer of douchbaggery begin, or does the old owner retain some of his own personal douch-ery?

Seriously though, don't you need a clean title in hand to get over the border anyways? This new law is sick!

We already covered this. Even if you sell your bmw, you are still a douchebag for life. You could get the letter yourself on your way back if you dont want the current owner to go get it, yes you need the clear title to cross the border.
