    Default Champ Car project underway

So since this thing didn't come with all the necessary parts to make it run and drive I have some work to do.

Before I make the thing go I better make it stop. The car was originally fitted with 8-piston monobloc Brembos. Newman/Haas decided they were still good for spares so they retained the ~$4K ea. calipers when they sold the car. The also kept the rediculously expensive shocks and Cosworth only leased their engines to the teams so that is missing as well. Other than that it's pretty much all there.

So to get some 6-piston billet Wilwoods on the car I'm going to need an adaptor bracket. First I need to get the wheels off the damn thing. Too bad it didn't come with tools, I guess they decided they were still useable.

I think there's a wheel nut socket in there.

    All finished.

So now that I can remove the wheels I can get started on the brake caliper adaptors. Looks like it should be fairly straightforward.

Step 1, make sure the calipers will even fit.

And that they clear the inner diameter of the wheels.

This is where the adaptor is needed.

I started with 1x1 6061 which had already been anodized. The two holes farthest apart are for the existing mounting holes on the Champ Car uprights. The two holes closest together are for the Wilwood caliper mounting points.

    Adaptor mounted to upright.

Caliper mounted, those bolts are CLOSE!

Wheel mounted, damn that's close but it clears.

When I started this little project I didn't have any hardware to bolt the three parts together. I only had the existing studs and two nuts. I ended up machining four holes inline with each other on the centerline of the bracket. It turns out that that positioned the caliper too far outboard and the inner pad would not fit. I scrapped the first bracket and started another with the caliper holes machined .150" inboard of the upright mounting holes.

The bracket is mounted wrong in these two pics, the offset goes away from the rotor.

So I went out to put the car back together and decided to take a look at the rears to see what I'd have to do to get calipers mounted. It looked exactly the same so I did a test fit.

My job just got a whole lot easier.

    It spins freely, no rubbing.

Now I just to need to machine three more adaptors and order up some calipers and it'll stop. After I fab a brake pedal.............

Stay tuned for the next update.

Thanks guys, this is by far the biggest project I;'ve ever taken on but so far it's a lot of fun!

I will be driving the car when it's finished along with a few close friends who help along the way.

Thanks for the kind words fellas. It's hard to imagine the hours that go into designing and making the first part and getting it to work. When you look at a machined part you don't appreciate all the time that went into it, at least the first time around. The first part took almost 4 hours with all the measuring, sketching, test fitting etc. The second part (with the correct dimensions) took about 2 hours while the final three copies each took only an hour or so.

The current options for the powerplant are:

    Custom R1 V8 with 35R

    Built 20B with a 35R or 37R

Built VG30DETT with a single turbo, 37R or larger
