Electronic rust inhibitor

Hey guys.

Anyone own one of these electronic rust inhibitors? Do they work? Waste of money?? They cost 200 bucks at Canadian tire if they do what they advertise then it would be a good investment - any thoughts?

They've had many versions around over the years, since the late 80s. I don't think they work that great or lots of ppl in Alta would use them.

I'm interested to see if anyone's every used one?

Impressed Current Cathodic Protection. There are many many kilometers of pipelines running through Alberta with this type of protection.

dealerships offer these as an option, i believe my old work offered them for 80$ ish installed, i guess the idea started with it being on boats in salt water and it worked so it progressed to cars?

200 sounds a bit much for something basically using your car's frame as a big conductor

I stuck a zinc bar on the frame of my 20y old mazda truck, the bar started to oxizide fast!.... but I had some small rust spots still come up.

You'll have to replace it very often. The zinc bar mentioned above (sacrificial anode) WILL work, if you make sure they're linked. Cathodic protection doesn't work well since you need a CONSTANT DC current for it to work: if you turn off the current, it stops working.

other problem is the way the panels are connected...
current has to be able to flow to all the places you're trying to protect... doesn't usually happen
