Default $12,000 Speeding Ticket - Edson

    http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...3-30ac12b1dbce

A 34-year-old Alberta man was handed a $12,000 speeding fine this week after police caught him roaring down the highway at 263 kilometres per hour - more than twice the posted speed limit.

On May 1, a police officer noticed the man speeding on a Honda motorcycle on a stretch of Highway 16, between Edson and Hinton, Alta., with a 110 km/h speed limit. The officer gave chase, but was unable to match his speed, said Sgt. Ron Lyons with the RCMP.

The same officer later spotted the motorcycle in Hinton, which is about 280 kilometres west of Edmonton. The Edson Traffic Court handed down the fine Aug. 27.
Don't know how that would work since it was after the fact and they obviously didn't have a plate to just charge the guy in the 1st place. Must have been a pretty distinctive bike.

In either case, quite the hefty fine.

So the guy gets a ticket for a court appearance after they find his bike, meets with the crown and makes a deal that if he pays 12 grand he keeps his license. im sure you could have paid 5000 to a lawyer to get you out of that mess.

I like how they try to make it seem like public safety is their concern when in reality its all about the fund raising.

If a guy on a motorbike passes by at 260 there's no way in hell you could make an absolute positive ID on it later on down the road imo.

So the question is, who's gonna try for $25K maximum fine?

Do you need a Veyron to do it?

Seriously, how can the cops legitimately give him a ticket? I mean he ripped by at 260, and then issue a ticket after the fact when they see a biker in town and blame it on him. Is it that no one has a street bike out, so when they find one it must have been that dude? wtf

Either the cop managed to get a partial plate, say if the biker ripped past him when the cop was at like 110, or it was a pretty distinctive bike.

Either way, he was able to track him down somehow. I guess the gap in the fine being handed down means it was a plea bargain of some sort.

it says in the article that the cop couldn't match the bike's speed, does that mean the bike is fleeing from the cops? shouldn't he be arrested for that? (do you get arrested for fleeing the cops?, never tried it )

Unless your a really good flee-er and you can out flee the cops, you will most definitely be arrested for fleeing.

^ I thought cops aren't supposed to pursue a vehicle if it's going faster than like 180 or something?

If memory serves correctly, I think the rule in Alberta is if it gets to more than 30 over the speed limit they don't chase you

I had a friend who tried pulling this. A little different though.

He was first pulled over for speeding - going about 200k on highway 2. He ended up fleeing. They never caught up to him, and he claimed his plate was stolen - so they did not charge/ticket him for it.

The second time he tried it though, they were prepared. He turned the bike around and went in the other direction. But after riding for not more than 5 minutes, he went over a hill and they had set up a roadblock on the highway.

He was screwed. He had a previous record (nothing major), but as a result he was arrested and thrown in jail for 10 months. He lost his license for an additional year after that.

So note to those who think they can easily lose the cops because their bike is faster, remember this: It isn't faster than a radio!

Couldn't the guy just deny that it was him? No way the cop could have got his plate.

either he pled guilty and got the fine or it went to trial and they were able to prove identity, which would be the crux of the case.

even with a plate if they lost line of sight and did not find him untill later he could fight for just a registered owner ticket saying someone else was riding the bike.

also could be fought with saying it was another bike especialy if it is a common bike in common color. he could go to the registry and get a list of how many of that model bike are registered in the province.
