I get 2.75% at TD with my GIA. Still an extra couple hundred a month in interest for just sitting there "just in case".

You know what? I don't actually know how much it is. I'm guessing it's going to be around 3.25% or something.

I have had this account for years, but never had the minimum 5000 balance in it to accrue interest..

Community savings has a great high interest savings account... almost 4% IIRC, no fees, easy to withdrawl etc.

ING's current interest rate on a regular savings account is at 3% right now. and that's the lowest I've seen it in a long time. It was up to 4.5% a while back.
I use ING to save for things like vacations. Using what they call an "automatic savings plan" I save a couple hundred bucks a month. then when it's time to book a vacation, I have some money stashed away to pay for plane tickets and such.

I highly recommend using a separate bank account, like ING, to save for things like your rainy day fund, vacations and planned future purchases. that way the money isn't staring you in the face when you go to the ATM, and it collects a little interest as well.

Here's how i save money shopping.

    1) I check http://www.redflagdeals.com/ for good web coupons, codes, and in store promos if i'm looking around for nearly anything.

    2) I keep a "coupon folder" that i take shopping by printing every vendor i'm interested in from visa perks. It's just a site that lists discounts for using your visa card at canadian stores. usually 15-20% off

    http://www.visaperks.ca/visaperks/

saved 25$ on some runners at running room, saved 85$ on a coat and bag at banana rebulblic. Lots of good stuff there, and i always pay with visa anyway, so you'd be stupid not to.

You would save more if you didn't shop there. IMO safeway is the most expensive grocery store. Walmart is the way to go for packaged stuff, and IGA or Co-op is the best for produce and deli stuff.

I have also heard that safeway is the most expensive grocery store.

My father in law works for safeway, and he said that once they renovate them to the new style, the typically raise prices about 5% to cover the costs. People dont' mind, because the store feels so "nice."

One good grocery savings tip is to buy the fatty "regular" ground beef and just to drain off the fat when cooking. It's about half the price of the "extra lean" beef, and it isn't that much of a hassle to drain out a little fat.

I have stopped drinking so much over the last month. And I feel much better too, lol.

I am bringing canned lunches to work a lot more, driving less, buying more needs than wants.

Oh, and I try to take advantage of my in-laws and parents and mooch stuff off them. Actually, they just give us food everytime we are over. Going to my parents house is like going for a grocery trip, with a meal and good chit chate in between.

Are you sure it's 4% right now? I have one with RBC and when I checked the rate recently (last week?) I thought it was at 2.75%.

    Just re-checked:
    Personal Accounts Interest Rates

    Rates for 01 October 2008

    RBC High Interest eSavings®
If balance is Interest Rate [%]
    All Accounts
    All balances 2.750

Isn't it funny how a lot of things that are bad for our bodies are also bad for our wallets? Smoking, drinking, eating out all the time.

Bring my lunches and snacks to school instead of buying over priced shit here. Also using the gym in my building instead of forking out for a gym membership. Not driving to Canmore so often to save on gas too.

Just eliminating expensive things at the grocery store too. No more of this $3.50 for a small bottle of fancy health juice. Fuck that.

$200/paycheque goes directly into a separate savings account with PC Financial. 4.25% interest on that account. So far my girlfriend and I have saved almost $5000 in the past year.

It's our "rainy day" account or whenever we need to treat ourselves to a little pampering at the spa.

A little goes a long way when you add it all up in the end.

    Just re-checked:
Guess i was wrong. It was 4% when i opened the account. Didnt realize it fluctuated but i guess it does.

Im going to look into PC financial now. 4.25 guaranteed sounds great

I would consider that too, except I'm not sure if there would be fees, etc. for constantly transferring money back and forth between RBC and PC financial to maintain that account. Would it be worth it at the end of the day?
