You need to grab a garmin GPS and the mapping software. Goto www.gpscentral.ca or www.gpscity.com. They both sell the mapping I believe

TomTom has solid POIs, and you can always install extra's. You can get all the perks of some of the more expensive ones for pretty cheap by going with the 130s

I used a addon with my garmin maps. Its called Oil Trax. It allows you to search by LSD and includes lease roads for navigation. If you PM me i might be able to get you a copy.

I just Googled the program because I've never heard of it before, but it looks pretty helpful. I like the POI's that come with my Tele Atlas maps on my device, but always good to find other nice add ons like that

If you know the co-ordinates of the location, which is on every wellstie survey, you can input those right into your GPS.

I've done this on a Garmin Nuvi 300 series and it worked like a charm. It also has a pretty good database of secondary and private roads. I'll be testing it north of Fort Nelson next week, and that's all on private roads, so I'll be able to let you know how it does.

Also, if you have a wellsite in Alberta, you can use this free tool to convert it to a lat/long location that you can easily load into your GPS.

To be honest, for well sites I think your kinda pooched with normal GPS systems...

To use normal GPS systems with LSDs, you'd need to import them as POIs, and good luck on finding roads to get to them...

If you need well sites, and road maps on how to get to them, best bet would be looking for a commercial system.

One of my clients implemented a system, turned out not to cost too much.

If you cant find a GPS solution I'd suggest the Canadian Oilfield Atlas ($225) That is what we use (Land Surveyors) to get around, mind you we've always got a helper/navigator to keep an eye on the book. Very well updated with pretty much all oilfield roads, very handy in congested areas like Drayton or Kaybob... then again we've always got the w/s plans so we know what roads the a/r's take off from.

Just as an update, the built in database of roads in my Nuvi is pretty useless in the Fort Nelson area. Doesn't even have major extablished forestry roads. That's wierd because it was great everywhere around central and southern Alberta and SE BC. Maybe Oil Traxx is the way to go. I'll see if my company will spring for it.
