Default Missed a lecture due to accident... got me thinking about exams and tests.

So, today I missed an early morning lecture due to an accident. (U of C btw)

Fortunately, I wasn't involved. It just happened in front of me. The road was obstructed. Police, ambulance, and firemen came very quickly to do their thing.

All in all, it took the better part of an hour.

That delay, led to another that instead of being consistently ten minutes early, I was forty minutes late that I just didn't bother going.

Just as well, people were already heading out one by one when I got there. When I asked them if any important information that is not within the textbook lecture was given out, I was told no. Lucky me.

    So this got me thinking:

What if this had been an exam?

What if again, someone gets into an accident on the route I usually take, blocks it for hours on end, and I get delayed and completely miss the exam?

I know in cases of sickness, accident, injury or other personal matters I can appeal for a reschedule.

But what about in this case where some other unlucky individual causes me to be late? I can't prove there was even an accident at all, seeing as I wasn't involved.

    What do I do then?

automatic fail and you will most likely get kicked out of uni resulting in no other universities accepting you either.

lol its funny how little some profs care

my friend gave a doctors note dated October 2nd saying he was sick on September 30th, despite all the UofC rules saying that the sickness date is supposed to be the same date as the test

the most important thing to do is to contact them immediately, and most of them will understand, unless you really have an asshole prof.

My answer would be email your professor from your car and let him know what's up. He can make suggestions for you to fix the situation, and if even he can't offer a suggestion then I guess he has to offer a retest.

Unless your Prof is a complete asshat most have no problem letting you write a makeup exam. Some even use the same one as everyone else wrote.

I would get proof for the reason why you missed an exam though (i.e. Doctor's Note, Proof of delay due to emergency)

Missed 2 exams in one day once and had no problem writing one later that day and the other the next day after talking with the profs.

My commute to school is similarly timed. I always try to leave about thirty minutes earlier for exams, it won't solve the problem in extraordinary circumstances but it helps.

Going to have to factor in snow and ice soon too...

I don't see why not, since profs make the makeup exam harder than the original.

For finals, talk to the registar's office. For mid-terms, talk to your prof.

For finals you could be writing the deferred exam (which is sometimes a lot harder, sometimes a lot easier).

For midterms, it's not a big deal. Most profs will be lenient and just weight the final more heavily. One of my profs had a deal that if you ace the final, it's an automatic A.

^^That's a sweet idea. How did it work? If you had say...80% going in but got 100% on the final, you'd get an A. But if you got 90% on the final you'd end up with like a B+ or A- or something?

When i was in college, one prof told us that we get to miss 2 classes. after that, your out. He said and I quote "i don't care if your dads funeral is one day and your moms is the next, if you miss more than 2 of my classes, your out"

we started the program with 58 students, and 16 ended up with degrees.

LOL, at MRC back in the day I had the wrong time for my comp sci final, I noticed people writing and I had 10 mins left, I wrote the exam and got a B+ on it. Pretty sure you can enter late.

On exam days I usually try leaving for school at least 2 hours earlier so I don't have to deal with accidents and be late for an exam.
