Police Hand Out Thousands Of School/Playground Zone Tickets In Crackdown
    CHQR Newsroom
    10/14/2008

Calgary police issued a whopping 9,000 tickets last month in a crackdown in city school and playground zones.
Constable Mike O'Connor says the traffic enforcement program ran from September 2nd to 30th, because motorists either forget about, or ignore the signs to slow down when classes resume in the fall.
Speeding and failing to yield to pedestrians accounted for a majority of the tickets issued - more than twice as many as the 4,246 tickets written last year during the same time.
However, O'Connor notes that this year, police had two radar units dedicated to the crackdown, which resulted in the higher number of summonses.

In addition, 11 suspected drunk drivers were taken off the road.

Good. I am not going to rant, but speeding through a playgroud zone is one of the few things that really drives me crazy. The playground zone in Lakeview is like a freeway.

Well atleast they set them up in shool/playground zones and not just on the highway so they can make extra cash.

Doing 20 km over on deerfoot is normal. Doing 20km over in a school zone is not.

I wonder if a ticket has ever been issued at say 45 minutes after sunset. This would be pretty lame. You'd be expected to know exactly when sunset is each day because you can't plead ignorance.

Probably very rare that the police issue a ticket like that unless they a driverdoing something really stupid. But if it comes to that, you bet the police knows exactly when the sunsets each day.

They're usually 0 tolerance in school/playground zone speed traps.

I got a ticket for going 35 in a 30 zone years ago, along with a huge lecture about how I could live with myself as a potential murderer.
