Has anyone done this before? my friends car got stolen, he got it back with a broken steering column, and Im helping him to replace it. Is there a DIY for this or can someone give us some tips?

did they just fuck up the lock cylinder? if they did, you can probably get away with just swapping that part out. you need a dremel to do it though...
anyways if that is not the case, it depends on your donor column.
if it has a wheel etc. if its complete, you pretty much undo all the plastic covers, and then you unbolt the portion of the steering wheel that lets it drop down and adjust...its like 2 bolts. you also undo a couple other ones down closer to the pedals. there is also a plastic cover around the joint on the colum that you can slowly pry off. All along the way, just unplug anything that is connected to the column. Once you are down to the very last part by the pedals, the spline is held in with one bolt iirc.
You want to make sure your wheels are straight, and when you put the wheel back on you want the splines to match up so you steering is straight when the wheels are straight. Its fairly straight forward. Also before you begin undo your battery and let it sit for 10 mins or so..
