    Default Rental after a collision

Not sure if this is the right place but it is kind of a legal question. Today I was in an collision with another vehicle. I need a rental as this was my only vehicle and the insurance company is being very vague on the topic. I understand that because I am 24 there is an issue regarding a rental, however if this is my only vehicle which I need to commute to work shouldn't the insurance company cover it. If it matters the other party was at fault.

Not all insurance policies cover a rental vehicle when yours in damaged.

    Read the fine print.

Did you buy loss of use? If you did, your insurance company should cover it (there may be a upper limit).

If you didn't, then hopefully you have comprehensive so your insurance will deal with it for you.

If you are on PLPD, and your insurance won't help you, it's up to you to negotiate with insurance agency from the guy who hit you.

My experience is that loss of use will cover up to a certain amount ($1200 for AMA) and the rest will have to be covered by party at fault.

I doubt body shop will get you a rental. A courtesy car may be if the damage is minor and won't take long.

Also my experience is if you're getting a rental paid by insurance, see if you can get away without using your own credit card. I had a rental for 2 months and there's was dispute/process delay/misunderstanding/payment issue and the whole $2500 got charge to my card. I was fucking mad and took me a while to clear that up.

One of my staff is in the same situation. They get up to $1000 coverage for the rental car, they have loss of use though on the policy. Crappy thing is that its going to take over a month to fix the car. So that $1000 is not going to be enough to cover that one month. The insurance adjuster said that they would try and see if the other persons insurance would cover the extra cost. If they wont, then I'm going to let them borrow one of our cars for the first two weeks and then use the rental the last two.

So I have spent the whole afternoon on the phone trying to figure this out. I do have comprehensive but no collision or loss of use. What they are waiting before approving a rental is to see who was at fault. If the other driver admits liability for the collision then the rental will be fully covered. That is really the only delay right now.

As for damage not 100% sure on the mechanical side of it, however based off of what I could see I will be need a new spindle, tie rod, ball joint, etc on the front driver side. The front drive shaft and mounts, new rim and tire on the front driver side. New hood, grill, fender, bumper, and possiblly a door. 2 New Airbags and new arm rest. Like I said not sure of any frame damage or how the 4wd and engine bay survived.

It was on a 2006 Ranger if it matters.

And a preliminary estimate if they fix it is to have it back by the new year. A similar rental will cost around $2800 for the mean time. This was my daily driver too so the km will be used up too.

From your description, it sounds pretty close to a write off.

Im 23 and I could rent a car from enterprise. There are 2 options you really have.

One, Rent a car and pay out of your own pocket, keep all the recipets because if the other drive admits liability his insurance will pay you back for the rental.

    Two, Borrow a car.

I know options 2 sucks, but it was all i could think about.
Its not only about money. Its about freedom, friends and family too.
