there was always a 4 cylinder version on the liquid cooled flat 6 ready to go. Porsche was not sure how the Boxster would sell at first so a cheaper 4 cylinder version was ready in the wings.
tax or emmision laws can produce an abnormal engine to comply with local regulations... kind of like the ferrari 208 version of the 302/328 GTB for italy
