Default legacy got water in engine

When my friend removed the coil over from the right side of the vehicle, he also removed the covering inside the wheel well and the air baffle.

Last night it was raining (2 am) and I did not intentionally go through any puddles but I guess some rain must have kicked up into the air filter.

When I was on a nice straight road I tried going to 6000 rpm in 2nd gear and the car wouldn't allow me to go past 5500. It was then idling funny.

This morning I took out the air filter and a 1/3 of it was wet. I removed the air filter and turned on the car. It goes to around 1100 rpm after starting then when it starts to drop it just starts to sputter and around 500 rpm it just dies. If I rev it up it is fine though.

Also when I turned the car on and it was running I heard a bit of clicking. I turned it off for now.

This worries me. It just seems like the car is not idling.

Can someone please recommend what my first step should be to get back to normal? The car is a 2000 Subaru Legacy B4 RSK.

    Thaaaanks.

Oil change is a good start, I'd also check each spark plugs to see if any were possibly hydrolocked.

If the problem doesnt go away, do a compression test.

shouldn't be hydrolocked if its running. I drowned a few cars before (Raglan Pits Ontario), check your sensors - they seem to go immediately (TPS)

    Ok thanks everyone so far.

Right now me and my friend are cleaning the maf.

He said the car turns on fine and revs fine just does not idle.

Iacv is functional because when we unplugged it the car went into limp mode.the car idled.

When we unplugged the maf nothing changed. It wouldn't idle. Same symptom as last week when we forgot to plug the maf back in when we turned the car on.

Hmmm, almost does sound like the MAF.

What kind of intake system are you running?

Yeah mang, if your engine was still running VERY slim chance it was hyrdolocked...

TPS, MAF, IACV, those are all very common parts to get misted with water which until they dry out or you clean them will cause erratic operation of your boxer...

I see it all the time on modded Scooby motors...

yea - even over the phone i knew it had to be a maf malfunction. when we pulled the iacv nothing changed so it had to be the maf. That bit of water had to go through the turbo, the intercooler and all that pipping before it got anywhere near the throttle body and the iacv.

we had to rescue some other students yesterday. their vw stalled in the rain. turned out to be a damp distributer cap...wasnt even wet, just a few drops in there! the cap was missing that rubber O-ring that sit in between the cap and the distributer housing.

hussein just pulled up. car is idling like shit, around 500. Its a steady 500 but still too low for comfort. This weekend we will pull and clean everything up the the intake collector. maybe we will get to removing those nasty ass swirls in the paint too!
