Default The Official Drafting/Cad Monkey Thread

Figured since there were enough of us on here we could have our own thread.

    Post up anything Drafting related.
    -Jokes
-Job Openings/Layoffs (Applies at the moment)
    -Questions (Field or Software related)
    -Projects you have/are working on.
    -Samples/pictures of your work.

Also, anyone interested in perhaps getting into the field we can warn the.... I mean guide them in the right direction.

I've got a bunch of funny jokes/pictures on my laptop that I'll post tonight.

I'm pretty sure I'm not asking you to do anything illegal.

Just a warning about this one:

If you want to post up stuff you made on your own time, that's cool.

Drawings you do at work are the property of the client company of your EPCM... posting them up on the internet is an ugly can of worms to open that could get your engineering company in some serious shit... especially everyone for whose initials are on the title block.

Boo to waking up at 6am on BOTH weekend days this weekend for a CadWorx Seminar!

    The Piper's Lament

Approved for Design, the flowsheet read

'There will be no more changes', the boss he said.

So design I did the pumps with speed,

The voice in my head I did not heed.

The plot was tight, the stresses great,

    I couldn't stop, I can't be late.

Sweating blood, the pressure is on,

Go home at dark, return at dawn.

For days on end the scene remained,

Then mechanical says 'The pumps have changed!'

The pumps anew just wouldn't fit,

The whole design is a piece of sh!t.

So once again my morale was low,

The voice in my head said I told you so.

Very True. I've done a number of buildings around Calgary, I always take pictures throughout the construction process for most of the buildings.
Perhaps someone else might have pictures to share.

Samples, well, like you said, it's based on what you're working on and how high profile it is.
Some guys working for a fabricator detailing the local walmart don't have to worry so much.

I think it has more to do with ethics than risk of getting caught.

Simply put... someone is paying you to draft something for them. Regardless of how big or small, or how visible the project is, you shouldn't be posting it up on the net out of respect to both the company you work for and your client.

And if the client somehow gets wind that the drawings they paid for are floating around on the 'net, they won't give one shit how it got there or whether it was well intentioned, they will call the company and face fuck those responsible.

    edit:
Also, even talking about the projects you're working on in a public forum is somewhat bad form. So say I know you're at Colt, and you say you're working on this gas plant and the guys at PetroCanada don't know shit, etc. Well, if I know guys over at PetroCan now it might slip out in some conversation that "oh by the way, the guys over at Colt think you guys ain't shit."

It's no big deal bullshitting about this stuff over beers, everyone does it... but on a public internet forum where it's easily accessible... could be trouble.

Yeah. I am up at about 5:30. Seeing as I only live 4km from the office, I have to be up that early in order to score one of the last parking spots beside Western High instead of paying 20 bucks a day in parking. (I know it's cheaper than the core)

This will change as I am soon to be working with JfuckinC modelling the mechanical for the new Hospital in the South.

Be careful when you put revision clouds on your drawings!

    Engineering office statements explained
    From Draftsperson.net

    1. A number of different approaches are being tried. (We don't know where we're going, but we're moving.)

    2. Close project coordination. (We should have asked someone else.)

    3. An extensive report is being prepared on a fresh approach to the problem. (We just hired 3 guys. We'll let them kick it around for a while.)

    4. Major technological breakthrough. (Back to the drawing board.)

    5. Customer satisfaction believed assured. (We're so far behind schedule that the customer is happy to get anything at all from us.)

    6. Preliminary operational test were inconclusive. (The darn thing blew up when we threw the switch!)

    7. The test results were extremely gratifying. (It works and boy are we surprised.)

    8. The entire concept will have to be abandoned. (The only guy who understood the thing quit.)

    9. It is in the process. (It is so wrapped up in red tape that the situation is almost hopeless.)

    10. We will look into it. (By the time the wheel makes a full turn, we will assume you have forgotten about it.)

    11. Please note and initial. (Let's spread the responsibility for this job.)

    12. Give us the benefit of your thinking. (We'll listen to what you have to say as long as it doesn't interfere with what we have already done.)

    13. Give us your interpretation. (Your warped opinion will be pitted against our good sense.)

    14. See me, or Let's discuss. (Come down to my office, I'm lonesome.)

    15. All new. (Parts not interchangeable with previous design.)

    17. Lightweight. (It's cheaper than our last design.)

    18. Years of development. (Finally got one that worked.)

    19. Energy saving. (Achieved when the power switch is off.)

    20. No maintenance. (Impossible to fix!)

    21. We need to meet for a coordination meeting. (I am hopelessly behind schedule, so can slow you guys down too?)
