Default beware when selling your car

dont know if this should go here or in the General Car section.

nothing in the article thats not common sense - thought sometimes a reminder is needed.

interesting that it says many insurance policies dont cover this. the suprising thing is that some do cover it. what type of policy or rider would this be?

    Subject: PA/MRU #08-599 VEHICLE FRAUD
    From: Martin Kemp

    -----BEGIN MD5 -----------------------------------

    -----------------------------------------------------------------
CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE
    -----------------------------------------------------------------

The Calgary Police Service is investigating recent cases of
    vehicle fraud.

There have been at least two cases over the past two weeks
where a culprit has contacted people who have advertised a
vehicle for sale, usually in a classified ad publication.

In each confirmed case, the suspect offered to purchase the
vehicle, and went to the seller's home in order to pay for,
and pick up the vehicle. The suspect arrived at the seller’s
home in the evening, after banking hours, with a friend. The
pair said they are from out of town.

The suspect paid with a bank draft, leaving with the vehicle.
In these recent cases, the bank drafts have been fraudulent,
and the sellers were left without their vehicle. Many
insurance policies do not cover this type of offense.

Anyone who has information on these incidents, or has been a
victim of this type of fraud is asked to call Det. Jeff
Anderson at the CPS District 8 office, 403-567-6800.

Police recommend that a seller not relinquish a vehicle until
they have confirmed that the bank draft, money order or
certified cheque is valid. This can be done by contacting the
issuing bank, verifying the account information is not
fraudulent and that the bank issued it. This means that
transactions should happen during banking hours, so the
seller can confirm the payment is valid.

If a buyer is resistant to waiting for the banking
information to be confirmed, this this may be a warning sign
    that the payment is fraudulent.

Ya, most times the cheque is for $10 and they change it to $10,000 or something like that. And because they've provided a portion of payment in return for the goods, the car is legally theirs and they simply owe the seller another $9990.

Yeah -- i think the kid was from cochrane or okotokes. He gave a member a 15$ bank drafe, with the 0 0 0 for teh 15,000 being etched in or something.

Cant' remember what happened i beleive it was a case of the CPS and RCMP sitting on their hands doing nothing for a while unilt the OP got invovled.

I thought this happened to me when I was selling my prelude. Someone from out town was coming with a bank draft and that he would be here when banks were closed. I asked him which bank and location he was getting it from and I simply called the bank to confirm it was a legitmate draft.

I don't believe any Insurance company would cover this loss.

There are 4 types of theft that are excluded under alberta's standard policy form, this would fall under (c) "caused by the voluntary parting with title or ownership, whether or not induced to do so by any fraudulent scheme, trick, device or false pretence"

This happened a while back with the owner of a 240. He sold the car, and the kid took it back to RedDeer where he ripped it around and it took a while before the owner got his car back.
