    Default Shaw Nitro Help

So my roommates and I are computer nerds and we need good download, gaming speeds. So we recently upgraded to Shaw Nitro.

But we have been getting speeds like THAT. My roommate went out and got a Cisco 2600 (Commercial Router) and a commercial switch as well.

He says we are getting gains on our internet speeds but I can't tell any difference when playing L4D, or hosting DOTA games which everyone lags when I host.

I can deal with L4D but all i really want to do is host a damn dota game without everyone lagging.

Ok so my roommate torrents ALOT, and he is always on remote from his work to his home comp whenever he isn't here. (I know torrents will lag me to fuck, but remote access?)

I guess the real question comes down to, is there another high speed internet service which has better speeds/bandwidth/ ext for equal or lesser than the price of shaw Nitro? ~100 a month.

We don't have bundled stuff from shaw. Any advice on this matter would help as well ,just remember I can't harp my roommate every time I want to host a DOTA game if I'm lagging.

Your roommate runnings lot of torrents is probably the reason you are having trouble hosting a DOTA game. Ask him to stop his torrents the next time you host a game, see if it helps.

It would be cheaper to have a seperate ISP just for him and you just run shaw xtreme ...

i honestly don't think shaw is the best for hosting servers, all the traffic is routed through toronto before it hits the rest of the world

The problem is most likely your Cisco 2600 series router.

Some of the earlier routers only had a max routing throughput of around 8-10 Mbps. It is a low end router not used on high speed connections.

Just because it is Cisco and expensive doesn't make it any faster.

    Hmmm,
When Shaw says I can get up to 25MBPS download speeds, what does that translate to in speedtest.net?

If i get 8000KB on speedtest would that be equivalent to 8MBPS? Or is there other variables which I have to take into account.

Ive got 13MBPS on the cisco.

    Just now lol.

    ^

Should be a max of 25000 down using speedtest.net (in theory)

PM me your modem MAC address and I will ensure that there is no errors or saturation on your node that could effect speeds.

You should get 25,000 kbps on Speedtest at full speed.

Get rid of the 2600 router.

    Trust me.

The throughput of the router is not that good. Those routers are used for slow T1, ISDN and Frame Relay connections.

Better off with a Linksys router.

    Take a look at this.

    http://www.cisco.com/web/partners/do...erformance.pdf

Find your router and look under Fast/CEF Switching for the max throughput in Mpbs (1 Mbps = 1000 kbps).

You will notice that the 262X has a max throughput of 12.80 Mbps (12,800 kbps).

By using that router you are impacting your connection DRAMATICALLY.

    You using LC or DC?

That is the only way to host a game of DOTA.

Hey thanks a lot for the input guys, I had a linksys router before, with some custom firmware, I think my roommate talked with shaw because everything seemed slow, after we upgraded to nitro.

My roommate works at IBM, I think he does networking and stuff I just thought this was the best way to go....

With your low upstream speeds it looks like someone on your network is downloading torrents.

The Nitro connection only has 1mbps upstream and if someone is maxing that out with torrents or gaming (uploading 120 KB/s) your fast download will also be impacted.

If you have slow upload your download speeds will also be VERY slow.

    He quotes,
"the fast ethernet interfaces on the 2621 that I have are 100 Mbps linterfacesm that translates to about 12.5 MBps"

"the internet connection we currently have is 25 mbps, which translates to 3.5 MBps"

Get a router that does QoS/packetshaping (sometimes called "gaming routers") and set it up properly so bulk transfers like torrents and ftp get lowest priority, with interactive stuff like games and remote desktop getting highest. Everything else goes into the 'default' (middle priority) queue.

torix is just one of the many routes it can take...

Hahaha well the reason why we switched to the 2600 was because we weren't getting gains from it on nitro. (Supposidly)

I believe when we tried to set the priority for my hosting, and less for torrents it did shit all.
