Oh sorry didn't notice you were the OP :S plug one machine straight into the modem at like 3am and see what kind of speeds you get, and/or msg BottleFed or myself your HFC MAC ID and we can check on the status of your modem and node.
G'luck.

Your friend is silly. Yeah the ports can connect at 100Mbps but the data isn't getting routed/switched at 100Mbps. That said, I'm not convinced that it's causing your problems.Originally posted by Boat
He quotes,
"the fast ethernet interfaces on the 2621 that I have are 100 Mbps linterfacesm that translates to about 12.5 MBps"
"the internet connection we currently have is 25 mbps, which translates to 3.5 MBps"
First connect a SINGLE computer into that router and then the router into the modem. Do a speed test. Then plug the computer directly into the modem and do another speed test. That will give you some indication of whether there's a performance hit from the router.
If your speeds are good with the router then just tell your friend to throttle his torrents (Or do it yourself with QoS).
If they're not good with the router but are good with the router, you've got your answer right there.
If your speeds suck plugging directly into the modem then it's Shaw's problem.
EDIT: I just saw this, that's pretty effing good. Under what circumstances did you get this speed?

Thats the thing I cant ask him to turn off his torrents every time I want to play a dota game.
He says he can do queing for the router or allocate bandwidth 25% to each person in the house.
Anyways, thanks for all your help Mibz,Grog, Sput. I really appreciate it.
I think everthing is good on the modem end, no point in sending the mac address?
if you still haven't tried setting up QoS on your GL, get tomatos firmware (dd-wrt blows for qos) and try setting it up and see if it makes a difference or not with torrenting while doing other stuff.
also i don't really think anyone has had succession on getting the full 25mbit, i've google'd up shaw nitro and alot of other forums (digitalhome, canuckforums) and a bunch of other small forums all say that they max out at 13-17mbit, not one person commented on getting anywhere near 25, and they all switched back to xtreme-i.
now the thing you can try it setting up QoS (and try without), and then try downloading and playing games on multiple computers or gaming systems and see if theres any slowdown or spikes. (no torrenting, as previously posted, since the upload limit is 1mb it will be shit no matter what you try) because maybe it cant reach 25mbit on one computer, but can be split up to equal 25mbit from using it on multiple computers and gaming systems? just a guess but its worth a try.
if not switch back to xtreme-i, its what i use and its more than enough for gaming and browsing on multiple comps, or torrenting on a single comp while everyone else dies of lag XD

Instead of starting a new thread, what kind of connection would this be? Blazing fast when no one is at school.

I do get great service there, especially when I mention my name, haha.
SAIT has fiber, from Group Telecom (Bell) it appears...
Xtreme comes with Powerboost, meaning your first little bit is uncapped, so because the speedtest is a relatively "small" file that is right. I hit 17mbits from the newsies at first too, then it settles in at the usual 10.Originally posted by bball2
I'm getting these speeds with shaw high speed extreme:

Something definitely seems fishy with your speeds.

OC3 i believe
Sig nuked by mod.
That's not how throughput works.Originally posted by Boat

Just because there are 100 mpbs interfaces doesn't mean the router will actually route data at full line speed.
While you can plug in at 100 mbps the router only passes data from one interface to the other (on the same router) at 12.8 mbps.
So the bottle neck is the router that is limiting your 25 mbps connection down to 12.8 mbps.
you could also see if they'd let you have 2 xtreme-i connections in your house and just split them up between yourselves, since the cost is pretty much the same.
Nitro: $101.95/month standalone
Xtreme-i: $50.95/month standalone so 2 connections would be $101.90/month
Shaw will do that, and both will get full speed without his torrents clobbering your games or porn or whatever. Good ideaOriginally posted by d4ftpuNK

Does the wireless router you have determine how fast your internet is? I currently have a Linksys WRT54 router. I currently have Shaw Extreme and it usually runs around anywhere between 5MBS - 20MBS it fluctuates alot. If i bought a better modem would it give me better speeds?
The way I'm thinking is since the router supports up to 54MBS and I only run at 20MBS at the most the router is fine.
I have a WRT130N at home and I'm getting similar connection speeds, BUT my PS3 never disconnects me from the internet, but with my WRT54 it does it 3-4 times a day.
do you have a 60gb PS3? because it hates the WRT54 Series. i have the GL and it disconnects me from the PSN all the time, i had to plug my connection through a switch instead of my router. which works pretty well like a direct connect.
i believe wireless can only transfer 10Mbps while a wired connection can transfer up to 100Mpbs, that would be a reason for your slowdown, I never use wireless for any connection heavy internet use.
First off 10Mbps is wireless B witch no one really uses anymore. Your most common is G now that advertises at 54Mbps. On top of that wireless communication is no Full-Duplex meaning it can't transmit and receive information at the same time so there goes half your speed right there. On top of that you have your encryption and other packets add load reducing it even more meaning your 54Mbps wireless connection is actually about 20Mbps. Wired connection in full-duplex is much closer to the advertised value but still looses some.Originally posted by d4ftpuNK
