    Default Frozen Battery

I`ve had my civic parked up in Edmonton since the end of Oct and decided to start it up today. I know it gets cold here, so i gave her a boost and started it right up. I let it run for about 10 mins, then shut it off, and went to restart it since it was warmed up. Almost dead and wouldn`t even crank over. The batter is new from this summer, so i yanked it out only to see how bulging it was, talk about frozen! I had no idea they expanded so much. Here;s a pic of what it looked like, crazy

lol its farked, I dont trust them even if it works after its thawed out.

They don't hold nearly as much charge and are more prone to leaking.

I'd thaw it, and warranty it.

I don't think that they will warranty a battery damaged due to freezing. A very simple solution to avoid this problem is to just disconnect the negative lead from the battery if the car will be sitting for a period of time. When the battery has a full charge the liquid inside it remains an acid and will not freeze. Once the battery loses its charge the liquid will become water again and freeze. With the battery connected there will always be some drain on it and likely to lose its charge and will likely freeze solid.

Well, i took those pic yesterday once i tool the battery out of the car, and brought it into the house. It has thawed out and gone back to a square shape, i'm going to throw a charger on for a couple of hours and see how well it holds a load test.

I think i will leave the battery disconnected after the fact though if it will help from freezing up in the future.

just make sure if you're charging it you put it outside or in a garage or something, i wouldn't want that thing exploding or catching fire in a house.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

Wow, that battery is done for. Even if it works again afterwards it has been permanently damaged and I would be really worried about it. I am dealing with a frozen battery right now, but mine is not all bulged out like that...

It might still work after you thaw it out and charge it. But the plates inside are likely to be damaged and may short circuit. In the future, just make sure you dont leave a discharged battery in the cold.
