Default This point and shoot is impressive!

Saw a post on dpreview about the Panasonic DMC FZ28. I may have to pick one of these up to replace my current point and shoot.

Great example of the powerful zoom.

Some manufactuers are coming out with 26X zoom on P&S cameras now - its crazy. Most good point & shoots all look pretty good until you turn up the ISO past 200 or 400. The only exception to this would be some of the Fuji cameras, but the ones with the good sensors don't usually have the huge zooms if thats what you're after. The only exception would be the Fuji S100 however it is as big as a small DSLR. Most people would probably just rather carry around a little D40 or rebel XSi.

Nice specs and has RAW to boot. Only problem is, for that size of camera, why not just take your SLR??

Hardly what most people would consider a P&S.

It's almost the size of my XTi without interchanging lenses....P&S's are supposed to be small and light to throw in your pocket or purse to go out with etc....not be cumbersome, IMO.

My SLR is way bigger, way heavier and worth 5x as much.

This camera is only $400, its way lighter, simple to use and produces great results.

Its the kind of camera the GF could throw in her bag, bring to the beach, whatever. Yeh its not as small as the mini point and shoots but way more versatile.

The Panasonic LX3 produces much better images and is my favorite current P&S. f/2-2.8 lens FTW. Not a superzoom, but much more usable and portable than the FZ's.

LOL to each his own I guess.

EDIT: I compared Canon's Rebel XTi (not sure what you're using) to that Panasonic and the differences are not big like you're making them out to be. Sure, maybe if you're using a huge lens the weight may be different. Actual dimensions, quite similar.

    Canon Xti
    Dimensions (W x H x D) : 4.98 x 3.71 x 2.56 in./126.5 x 94.2 x 65mm
    Weight: 18 oz./510g (body only)

    Panasonic
    Weight (inc. batteries) 417 g (14.7 oz)
    Dimensions 118 x 75 x 89 mm (4.6 x 3 x 3.5 in)

Money wise, ya SLR is way more expensive but what's the point of having it if it's gonna be used so little compared to taking the P&S out to activities, like the beach. If it's for the GF, great, but does she know or want to know how to use that camera other than the AUTO setting? Most people I know, guys and girls, couldn't give a fuck and just want to take pictures at places like the zoo, the beach, vacation etc. Only seems worthwhile if both of you are going to be consistently using it, just for her may/may not be worthwhile.

Zoom. Sure 486mm would be great for the money and hey if you want that instead of buying an insanely expensive 300mm SLR lens then sure, I can justify buying this camera. Not for me, maybe that's where we differ. At a zoom like that, you're probably doing sports or likely wildlife, which is where I'd rather rent a 300mm lens than buy a different camera.

Not trying to argue with you, though it may seem that way. Just pointing out why it doesn't make sense for me to want it.

LOL, maybe if you stuck with the most basic lens.

Your smartass response is a big FAIL!

By extending your Nav and Tech package logic, my SLR is worth xx times more than the Panny due to the combination of all my lenses?

Speaking of which, did googe steal your thunder with his Sport package?

I had a FZ50 which is 2 models behind I think, great camera, definately too big to haul around everywhere. At that size, I rather carry a DSLR.

I really don't see the point. It seems for a while, before the megapixel game, manufacturers were playing the zoom game. Who the hell needs 18x zoom? I can't even remember the last time I broke out my tele.

As BCS pointed out, let's go for WIDE and BRIGHT. Seriously.. How many times have any of you actually said.. "man I wish this camera had more zoom"? Then count the number of times that you wished your cam went wider. Probably the latter. I'd love to see a manufacturer do something like 20 or even 24mm equivalent in an ultra compact cam. Now that's definitely something I'd buy. Screw this ultrazoom crap.

Edit: haha I guess the LX3 goes to 24mm. Nice!
