Default What is the correct/best answer to 'Do you know why I pulled you over'?

    Is there a correct answer?

Hypothetically lets say you were in a 50km/hr zone but your doing 60km/hr. And you know you were going faster then the speed limit. The Police pull you over and ask 'Do you know why I pulled you over'. You know your speeding, so should you say 'I was speeding/going over the speed limit/etc.' or should you say 'No officer I dont know why you pulled me over'.

I haven't been pulled over yet, but in case I get pulled over...For speeding, lights burnt out, no turn signal, etc. What is the correct answer to 'Do you know why I pulled you over'?

If you know why you got pulled over, so do they. Always be honest when it has to do with driving infractions (demerit tickets), if you lie it always makes it worse.
If you have a light out, the ol "it was working before i left" works 25% of the time - its worth a shot.

Always be extremely nice, until he/she gives you the ticket of course....

If you know what you did wrong, tell them, then apologize for it.

    Or use Sarah Silverman's line:

"Do you know why I pulled you over?"
"Because you got all C's in High School?"

    In reference to Rob Anders:

You are not required to answer the question but if you do, you are obligated by law to tell the truth. You can either evade the question or turn it back on the officer, answer his question with a question.

Lawyers and books will always tell you never to admit to anything, but I've found that ALWAYS gets me a ticket which I have to fight. Last few times I've been pulled over, I'm been completely honest, and got away with a warning... even for ridiculous shit that I've got busted with.

It is always best NOT to admit fault if you plan on fighting the ticket at any time. That is something you need to decide as soon as you see the lights. How are you planning on handling the situation?

Say you are OBVIOUSLY speeding. You can either claim ignorance, which probably will not make the cop happy. Or you can say "I might have been going a little fast"... a statement that doesn't completely admit fault, but does imply you know why he pulled you over.

If you're only going say, 10k over in a 50k zone, the best thing to say is "No officer. Why DID you pull me over"? This puts the ball back in his court, and he is obligated to tell you why. Through all this, you admit no fault and still have a chance in fighting the ticket. Only 10k over could very possibly be a reasonable thing not to have realized. Now, if you're going 100 in a 50, then you're really just mocking the cop and thinking he's stupid and will fall for it. That can be the difference between HAVING to go to court to save your license, or not.

In my personal experience - I am always calm and polite when talking to the cops. In some cases, I've gotten off pretty damn light because of it. I've been reasonable, and haven't acted like he has the intelligence of a piece of bacon.

It's all about being reasonable, and not displaying douchness to the cop.

Don't bother saying anything to them at all. Give them your ID and wait for the ticket. If you intend on taking it to court, what you say will be recorded and used in court.

Only been pulled over once, and was completely honest and listened to everything he had to say. I knew I was in the wrong, and in serious shit. (Coulda impounded car/automatic court date).

Totally depends on the situation though, and what you're being pulled over for. Did he see you committing anything? Were you doing anything illegal? Tough one...

The correct answer is to show cleavage.

And if you're male the correct answer is to pull out a box of donuts...

...to stuff your shirt with, then show cleavage.

If a cop that was driving around pulls me over, I'm perfectly honest. I've been given a warning every time by CPS but RCMP gave me a reduced ticket on the spot. I offered a slice of chocolate cake to a female cop once... very risky but she laughed and let me go :P

At speed traps I've tried everything. I've never been able to get these guys to budge.

I just got a ticket for a dirty license plate I wanted to walk around to the back of the cop car and look at his plate but he put his hand on his gun so I was worried he'd shoot me If I tried that

The correct course of action in this case would have been to say "If you think that's dirty, you should have seen what your wife did to me yesterday!". Case closed.
