Wish my TV had this feature!

SONY ANNOUNCED yesterday that it will be bringing out a new shiny range of six low-power LCD televisions, with a bid to boost sales.

The new offspring of the company have been named V5 and not only feature the recently developed fluorescent backlight, but also a sneaky little sensor which means that these TVs watch you.

Sony hasn’t gone mad here, this latest feature means that the screen display watches the viewer using infrared sensors and turns off when no one is watching it.

The V5 series will include two models which Sony claims consume close to 40 per cent less energy in comparison to previous models.

We can expect to see these TVs popping up on the market soon, yet they will be visiting Japan and the US before we get a sniff, at present you can expect to pay around $2,322. μ

You could probably just as easily get a motion sensor for an electrical outlet and plug any TV into that. Good idea though

Hopefully they give you the choice. My parents run their television all day, even when they're gone out to deter thieves. I can't remember a time growing up when the television wasn't on.

Infrared Sensor which means motion and temperature.

Which means, if it detects body heat, if won't shut off which is stupid IMO.

Sony is about to take energy saving to the next level with their new range of Bravia V5 TVs. The new televisions will automatically switch off when they sense that there is no one in the room. The TVs are equipped with a tiny sensor underneath the display; this keeps an eye on the room to make sure that there is someone there.

If all people who are watching the TV leave the room, then the Bravia V5 TV cuts power to the LCD, it will then switch back on when someone returns to the room. The sound will continue to stay on, if no one enters the room after 30 minutes, then the TV will switch in to standby mode.

This energy saving system will reduce the energy consumption by at least 50 percent during the time the display is switched off. General use of the Sony BRAVIA V5 range consumes less power than their predecessors; the new 40-inch and 46-inch draw 129 watts and 153 watts of power respectively, compared to the older V1 models, 217 watts and 263 watts, respectively.

So it's mostly to save the backlight, but I wonder if it will put a dvd on pause or something?

Not really even to save the backlight, I think just more for energy. You have to leave a LCD on for a LONG fucking time to ruin the back light.

For purposes of saving the TV itself, it would be better on a projection or plasma.

Like I said, the backlight on LCD's is pretty durable. It takes forever for those things to go. It isn't like a projection or plasma...
