Default Really old motherboard + 640gb Sata HDD...Doesnt work.

I want to use an old pentium 2 computer I have laying around to build a home server/bittorrent box. I have a Western Digital 640gb SE16 SATA hard drive that I am trying to pair up with my Asus P2L97 motherboard. Since this is a really old board, I am using a SATA to IDE adapter that I have laying around.

Ive used the adapter to convert SATA drives to IDE before on other motherboards just fine. However, the drive is not detected on my old motherboard. I am out of ideas, so I am wondering if maybe anyone has any ideas?

Maybe an IDE to SATA board? Might still not work if its too old
