Default Rock chip on windshield of a rental car

Not sure if anyone has any experience with this, but heres the story:

I have a rental from Enterprise while my car is in the shop. I didnt purchase any of the extra warranty/insurance and now I have a rock chip in my windshield.

Should I just go ahead and get it fixed at one of the glass shops before returning the car and pretend it never happened? Or should I return it and hope that that they won't notice?

If they do notice, do you think they will make me replace the entire windshield? I have read some online complaints how they make the customer replace the whole windshield even with a little chip.

    Any advices is greatly appreciated..

yeah go to a glass shop and get them to fill it in.

I rent cars a couple times a month for work and have had to buy my fair share of windshields.

You wont be charged for a rock chip in the windshield.

That is covered under regular wear and tear.

Exactly, well unless glass has crack around that chip.

Is this true for all rental companies? I was a little worried because they were trying to sell me the windshield insurance when i picked up the vehicle.

There is no crack around the chip, just the chip for now.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Just return the car with the chip in it and see what happens.

    Default Glass Chips

The first time I rented from enterprise (in th NE) I was given a tiny car. It was not safe to drive, as my knees where in the steering wheel,so returned it the next day and got a larger vehichle. The agent told me there was a rock chip and I would have to pay. I knew for a fact the chip could not have ocured during the minute time I drove. I said I would not pay they said they would get my insurance company to pay as I was paying for the rental (victim of hit and run drunk driver). To which I told them I would tell the insurance it was a bogus claim.

They decided to check back the last three times the car was rented. Guess what. ALL THREE individuals where CHARGED for the same rock chip.

If they see it they will try to charge you. If you do not know whether it was there before, ask them to verify back the last 5 rentals.

If you know it was not there when you rented then that is a different story which I can not advise you on.

As a side note I have since used enterprise at other locations and had excelent service.

I don't recall a rock hitting my windshield at all so I was really surprised to see that chip on the windshield...

May be I'll just bring it to a shop tomorrow and get them to fix it...I just don't want Enterprise to charge me for a whole windshield....

Yup when I told my insurance I was not willing to leave the car without being able to do the walk through because I did not trust them as far as I could spit them they ask why. The next day when I brought the car back the manager overheard me tell them I had authorisation from my insurance and why. He said don't charge them for the rental.

As I said most people would have just let there insurance pay. I not only did not let them pay but informed them of what happend.

Enterprise is who most insurance companies try to get you to use. And this enterprise tried to take advantage of it. I was not in a possition to try to get those before me's information. Who know how many people where actualy charged I just know the 3 before me where not sure of any others. Also had I not driven such a short time I may have assumed this is Calgary it may have been while I was driving.

The other enterprises I've used have been extremely professional. I will never go back to the one where the original incident happened

That's why you should do a detail inspection before driving off the lot. I have to mark up a lot of damages for a few times I rented.

I used to work at National/Alamo and yes we did charge for rock chips which werent noted prior to leaving with the car.

It sucks because in Calgary its really hard not to get one but it was company policy..

Last time I rented a car in Calgary from Enterprise I got a rock chip on Deerfoot. A month after returning the vehicle I received a bill in the mail for $400 for the windshield to be replaced from Enterprise.

Every time I've rented - they've always been good about chips, the last two I got only got dinged 20?25? for them...

But yeah, you gotta make sure you get every little mark on the windshield...

The only time I've had a fight was with regards to a BIG honking crack. They pulled the "Your buying a windshield" crap; except the rock chip that started it was noted on the inspection thus, pre-existing damage; took a very loud phone call to the manager, but it wasn't charged to me.
