REGINA - Regina police say Saskatchewan Roughriders general manager, Eric Tillman, has been charged with sexual assault.
Spokeswoman Elizabeth Popowich said the charges stem from an alleged incident involving a 16-year-old girl last summer in Regina.
Popowich said the assault was said to have taken place on Aug. 6 and was reported to police three days later.
"Subsequent investigation led to the arrest on the 27th of January," she said.
"I can only say that the alleged incident occurred in Regina and really now that there's a charge before the courts it's inappropriate to discuss it further."
Popowich said Tillman, 51, was asked to turn himself in at the police station and he did.
He was released and is to appear in court Feb. 24.
Tillman was introduced as the new general manager and vice-president of football operations for the Roughriders in August 2006.
He took over a team that had a tarnished reputation in the community because of several off-field incidents in which players ran into trouble with the law.
The most serious of those incidents involved linebacker Trevis Smith, who was charged and eventually convicted of knowingly exposing two women to HIV.
Tillman preached a message of respect and promised to clean up the team's image.
The Roughriders won the Grey Cup in Tillman's first full year at the helm and were the toast of the city.
The club has called a 4pm et a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
