Default Anyone able to get a good shot of the moon coming out right now.

I don't have a camera worth using, but has anyone seen how huge the moon is tonight? It's sitting really low right now. (8pm. Viewing from Killarney/Glamorgan area.)

Just noticed this as well while driving and me and the gf both thought it'd make a nice picture. We were up by Lake Chaparal.

There was a line of clouds on the top when I saw it..

Too bad I didn't have my camera with me.

    Would've made a great pic....

bah heres a quick one, hard when you have the shittiest stand ever made.

probably the best my 55-250 is going to capture of the moon, little to bright but it was a quicky, but if i zoom on my liveview, you can see that bottom right crater had a massive impact on the moon, the whiter 'moon dust' or whatever is scattered everywhere, like if you dropped a marble in a bowl of paint.

any programs to get 40D live view screenshots on laptops?

edit this crater, you can see how far the 'splash' marks go around it

    archers shows it better:

Took quite a few, playing with the camera. After finally figuring out the auto metering was making the moon all washed out (hey, first time ), I got it locked on the moon and all was good. Came up with this one. Wish I had a better lens.

This isn't from tonight, but the moon seems to be at the same angle and everything. You can see the splash marks pretty well on this one.

Thanks. The pic was super easy to get, I think I was out on my deck for all of 2 minutes:

-Nikon D300, spot metering, aperture priority, ISO 200, F8, single point autofocus, single shot autofocus
    -Nikon AF-S 300 F4 lens with a 1.4 teleconverter
-Sturdy tripod & ball head, mirror lock up, cable release
-The picture is a pretty much a 100% crop

hey guys what's these "splash" marks?

Is the moon being hit by meteorites?

yeah, like 100 million years ago. The "splash" mark is the Tycho crater.

The moon is always at the same angle, it's in a geosynchronous orbit.

Haha, this explains why I did so poorly in Astronomy. How come in some of the pictures the big crater looks like it is in a slightly different spot on the moon?

the moon also never changes size regardless of when you see it, its purely a perceptual thing when you say it looks bigger.

See, thats what I always thought. When closer to the horizon it appears larger...in perception. But when you take a picture of the moon on the horizon, and a picture when its above you...the pics show it being the same size. Given that the moon on the horizon has cooler orange hue.

I kept shivering and moving the camera around, and was too lazy to get my tripod out.. So excuse the softness lol.
