Got a ticket for outdated tags (expired Jan 31st, got the ticket Feb 28 - I'm an idiot, the thought hasn't crossed my mind since Jan 08'...I don't recall seeing a reminder notice in the mail).
My main question is, will this affect insurance? I have 1 other ticket from Feb 07', and the insurance rate grid indicates that 2 tickets within 3 years = more $$. I can't recall the offence, but it was listed under the Traffic Safety Act...
Is this any demerit points?
Also, what are my chances in fighting it? I don't dispute that I effed up, but $230 fine + about $300/year insurance is awfully steep for such a minor offence.
Why the hell do we need tags anyways? The best I can tell is to ensure the gov'ts records are up to date, and as a revenue user fee for having a car. The only real benefit that I can see is that you need your proof of insurance to get your tags, so this would make uninsured drivers more likely to get pulled over.
On a final ass backward note from playing with the insurance rate grid calculator on the gov't website, isn't it odd that getting 2 tickets in a 3 year span shoots my insurance up by $300ish, but getting a 3rd ticket would only tack on another $100

edit: just saw the sticky at the top. Oh well, this a less common ticket so I'll leave it up.
