Laptop constantly shutting off...

Hey guys,

My brother has an Acer Extensa 4420 that's constantly shutting off on him. Sometimes it will completely shut off and sometimes it will just restart. Now it's still under warranty and he did send it to Acer once, they replaced the fans on it. He'd send it in again but last time it took a month and he needs it for work. Is there anywhere in Calgary where he can take it for the warranty approved work? (He's a broke ass so somewhere that'll do it for free would be nice). Or is it an easy fix that you can just do at home?

might be bad ram, or the caps are going. Acer laptops are mainly shit and they don't service them in calgary, as far as I know only Toshiba and IBM have intown service. Don't waste your time, get a new laptop

It may be overheating, that would be my first guess. Try blowing some air into the fan ports and see how much dust comes out and whether that helps.

download a program called SPEEDFAN and monitor the temps closely - i found that I had a fan in my laptop that crapped out causing it to run at 65c+ and reboot every 1/2 hr.

This can be a number of things. Most of which only Asus can fix.

The first thing to do is figure out what factors are present when it restarts. Is it when the CPU is really loaded? When the laptop is moved or bumped? When the GPU is loaded? Are there any blue screen messages that flash before the system restarts?

Being able to reproduce the problem is key to solving it. If it's truly random, then it's most likely a motherboard issue.

Not worth trying to get someone to do it for free since it sounds like a mobo problem. Suck it up, send it in and never buy an acer again.

For future reference, I don't know about the other brands, but at work we deal with HP and their warranty service is top notch. I don't think it's ever taken more then a week to get anything done. This would include them sending parts or even us sending the who unit in to get fix.

My buddy had an acer doing something that like that before, he was getting temps of 70/80 celcius+ (Idle)

I sprayed the the fans with compressed air, it was down to about 55-65. Acers wont go much lower than that, but it solved his shutting down problem.
