What do you mean by 'buy in early'? I was more or less just worried about SHOP dragging the whole sector down should something happen with them, but with that logic anything can happen to any of them at any time. We can't predict the future so I dunno. The biggest problem with buying right now is buying at all time highs basically.

Early, like today. If you think you can predict the trajectory of a single stock in that index, then either buy or short that stock with your superior knowledge. Is you want broad exposure, then buy today and forget about timing things.

If SHOP goes down, even to Zero, that's only 7% of that ETF, but clearly it would have implications on the entire sector. That same scenario can be envisioned in EVERY sector. You protect yourself against that by investing in more than one sector I guess.

ETFs are like Calgary bylaws, there's one for everything.

What's so special about this fund or you simply like the holdings?

And agreed it's a long game but you can still get into diversified ETFs for cheap, just wait for market crashes like when the Dow was at 18k a couple months ago. XGRO's low was 16.57 vs 19.77 today

Anyway, Buffet still ain't buying so maybe he knows something the rest of us don't but I still like Bezos becoming the first Trillionaire. Thoughts on that @ZenOps ? Does anyone really need a Trillion dollars? lol

I like the sector itself, tho I don't know why anyone buys from Wayfair... their prices are so high lol. Very much a long game. If/when I buy more, this would be going into my RRSP.

Online shopping up by 99% in Canada during Covid. Up by 25% in the U.S. for June. 28% globally.

Had a delivery guy at my door in the beginning of May. I asked him how busy he was and he said it's the busiest he has ever been in his years of delivering. Immediately thought about buying calls for UPS but I chickened out.

Anyway, probably going with more EBIZ here.

What are some decent ETF's to look at for a 5 year or less position champs? Toss some opinion around, make for some light reading haha

How much risk are you willing to take and what kind of returns are you expecting?
Most people recommend this VGRO thingamajig.

Medium? It only has to average out 5% a year to be worthwhile to throw some monthly money at it for a couple years. Want the principle intact.

EDIT - technically anything about 3% is a "win", but 5 is a target.

There are no guarantees that the principle will be intact when you need it. I would look into structured products like Principle Protected Notes, or Principle at Risk Notes with downside protection which at least shields you from some volatility. Line the maturity dates up as best as possible as the secondary market for these are fairly illiquid.

I realize there are no guarantees, I just obviously "want" it to be haha. Medium risk group is what I'm looking for, i'm familiar with losing money occasionally. I'm not thinking 5 points should be very unrealistic in something relatively stable but maybe I'm dreaming in today's uncertainty?

That's 5% after tax too, so you're looking at 8% pre-tax cap gains and inflation? You're not going to get that with PPN. IMHO, it's silly to lock up your money for 5-7 years for PPN level returns. Grow some big gorilla hairy ballz. You can do boring with passive stuff but if you want tendies, do what @max_boost is probably doing when he's not out in the club with a bottle full of dub.

This is diversification in a nut shell. Equity, Fixed Income, Tech, Stoner, Real Estate, and Steady Income.

I think we should have a dividend/yeild investing thread. It's a very different conversation than we seem to have in the "investing" threads, but one worth consideration for some people.
@JRSC00LUDE I like Utility and Financial Stocks. Power Corp, Canadian Utilities, Transalta etc.
