Default Alberta Separatists - What's your view?

Just curious what everyone's views are on Alberta Separating?

I know that there's a few different alternate views:
    1) Alberta Separates
    2) Alberta becomes a new US State
    3) We take B.C. and Saskatchewan with us.

Just curious what all you Beyond'ers think about this, who supports, who doesn't... And has the recent "fear of recession" in Canada changed your point of views?

Anyone feel that we have what it takes to become the Western version of the U.A.E. (wealth wise)?

    Post your thoughts!

I'd be the first one to pick up a gun if we became a US state.

I've often said lets chop the country off at the Manitoba/Ontario border and let them suffer on their own but in reality I don't think I'd really want that. I just really hate Ontario and Quebec as a whole

    Obviously unrealistic.
But one thing I've never understood is this "One country. Fuck you if you don't like it! You're staying."

What fucking good is it to be "one country" if large parts of it don't want to be there?
If you're girlfriend dumps you, are you going to lock the door and say "We're a couple. Fuck you. You're staying."

Because I think that's more kidnapping than it is a relationship...

^ Agreed, but the vast majority of Canadians don't want to separate. It's just a vocal minority, in Alberta as well as Quebec.

I'm glad to be an Albertan.

I"m also glad to be Canadian and wouldn't want to seperate.

    I'd definitely vote against separation.

I have a feeling that the separatists are not looking at the big picture in terms of straight separation and joining the US.

There are a lot of desirable things about Canada that are not available in the US.

Our economy may be strong-ish when oil prices are high, and our IT industry is strong, but we could sure stand to be a lot more well rounded if we're to seriously think about separation.

Wasn't the difference only 0.6% in Quebec Referendum. That's pretty close.

I'd vote for separation in a heartbeat, ideally with the Yukon, BC, and Saskatchewan.

It's nothing personal. I just think the country's too disparate to run it as a nation. Look at the last 5 years - as things slowed down in Ontario, they needed interest rate cuts to stimulate the economy, while out here in Alberta, we were over-heated. Impossible to run it properly as a nation, especially when we expect the government to handle everything. Quebec and the maritimes have a total culture of expectation and reliance, and that doesn't help anybody.

I would also say that if we had a smaller and less powerful federal government that concerned itself only with trade, defense, sovereignty, and limited economic, that would be okay too.

Just for the record this is my opinion and only mine. Feel free to trash it if you want...

I'm sure you've all heard the argument about equalization payments, etc... So I'm not even going to touch that topic as its hard to define the specifics, and on top of that everyone has heard someone sitting next to them at a bar babble on about these equalization payments.

But Who here feels that western Canada gets neglected from the eastern Canadian based government. I wish we got the type of "City Beautification" that Quebec gets... But oh wait they are a "Distinct Nation" inside of Canada, lmao! What a joke. That's just one of many things that make me a tad upset.

I'm not sure if anyone else notices this, but even the general population thinks differently about the economy, and people working. I feel proud to say that Alberta has one of the most hard working ethics I've ever seen. It's all about getting stuff done, prospering and being successful. GO GO GO! Whereas things are a bit different over there (no offense, not saying they slack, but they are more into enjoying life and being happy).

Furthermore there is nothing wrong with what I stated above, but at the same time, I wish we had a Federal government that expressed our issues/lifestyle a little more than they do.

Again this is my opinion only, feel free to trash it, just don't get angry

It's funny how everyone conveniently forgets when Alberta was a HAVE-NOT province. All of a sudden we have some $$$ and we should separate

IMHO, I would prefer if just Quebec left, and took their share of Canada's debt. I think Canada would be better off, but I also think that Quebec couldn't survive on their own as a seperate country.

As for Alberta, I hope we don't seperate. I like being part of Canada.

Exactly. Sad fact but without Oil (non renewable) and real estate, alberta would be the leech. I LOVE alberta but I love canada too.

Id be all for an Alberta/BC/Sask separation. All the natural resources you can think of... oil, timber, farming, water etc... we could be like the middle east and sell our resources to the rest of the world. The federal gov't takes money from our province (especailly when the liberals were in) and re-invests very little in our province. I would rather it stay in the west.

As others have said, just my opinion.

Quebec has been a have-not province forever, and I still think they'd be better off separating. Without the culture of dependency, they'd have to stand on their own two feet, and they'd be better off for it.

There are times when Canada is a "have-not" country, when the economy is in the tank and there are deficits. Does this de facto imply that we should join the US, because not all times are rosy? Of course not. So why should the argument hold that Alberta should cling to Canada just because we've had hard times before, and like every nation will have hard times again?

If they left, I bet they become part of the US fairly quick
