With no experience behind you, you are just more likely to get a job over the guy who doesn't.

Talk to guys in the field, get cert in the field, upgrade yourself along the way, pay the follow.

I have no idea how well recruiters work for fresh grads but there's no harm in submitting your resume to Metafore, Longview, Graycon, etc.

Pretty much what Mibz said, apply everywhere and try to get your foot in the door. Go through Si Systems, Eagle Professional Resources.. and see what you can land.

As lucrative as any other pseudo-professional career.

Those companies all milk you dry... but at least you can get some good experience and often a job offer in the process.

After hearing about the Grueling class filled with ALL dudes I don't think I will take it. My work will pay for it but i am trying to get away from Networking and stay in the field as much as possible.

As for pay, I know people making 25$ with it, and others making almost double (with lots of experience). One of the Network guys from USA who programmed all the Target stores in Calgary was probably 50$ an hour. He was nerdy and knew his stuff but had ZERO hands on skills.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

The cert has no bearing on money once you've got some experience under your belt. I work with a CCNP that makes ~$120 an hour. If a guy is only making $50 an hour with "lots of experience" then he's either not very good at what he does or he's one of those guys that takes the first offer and never asks for a raise. If Target hired a guy at $50/hour to do their shit then it's because they went with the lowest bidder. Though it would be pretty strange for a company that size not to go through a firm. Maybe it was some exec's nephew :P

Bottom line, you can make a lot more than $50/hour with less than 5 years of networking experience in this city.

Yup, that's the name of the game. Work as much as you can, as well as you can. Get your hands on as many different designs, configurations and types of hardware that you can. It doesn't matter how much somebody else is taking off the top as long as you're happy with what you're making. You've got plenty of time to move out on your own once you've got a solid base of experience.

Have any of you gone for the double diploma (Networking + Telecom) or (Software Development + Computer Systems)?

Would it be worth it for someone to do this?

Might as well get a degree at that point unless you don't have to take the additional two full years to get the other diploma.

At the end of the day, degree's are worth more than diplomas (from my experience with my diploma, YMMV).

You do 2 years for the first diploma, and extra year for the extra

Why would you spread your abilities so thin? Why not become an expert in a specific area?

In the end, it doesn't matter what kind of cert or diploma you get, because you are not going to be an expert, or trusted to be one, fresh out of school. An entry level program like this isn't going to allow you bill out at 2$ per minute any time soon, so just graduate, and get a job. Once you gain some experience you will quickly realize what you like and don't like. Then you can specialize in this field.

This is my plan. Just trying to get a leg into the workforce during the summer.

Did any of you work during the summer after your 1st year?
