van wont start.

it is a 97 Pontiac Montana and this is what it does when i try to started. Can some one tell me what the problems is....im thinking it could be the starter or alternator.

First off..not a good idea to have the donor battery power car running while attempting a boost. possible ecu damage can occur. Second, if its cranking it aint the starter. Not the alternator if with a boost still wont start. You either have no fuel pressure or no spark. Quick and dirty fuel tests...turn key, not trying to start. if you hear a whine from the gas tank then your fuel pump is running. If you hear no whine grab a rubber mallot or some type of hammer your not going to damage the tank with and bang the tank while some one is cranking the van over. These vans are really bad for fuel pumps.

Take a screwdriver, put the driver end to the body of an injector, put the handle side pressed against your ear, have somebody crank, see if you hear a rythmic clicking. If so, they are firing. Next, put your ear to the fuel tank, and have somebody turn the ignition to on *not start* and listen for the fuel pump to prime. If That works, start checking ignition componants. Could be your ignitor (also known as ignition module)

Fuel pump. I had the same van and the fuel pump died at about 160k.

bang the gas tank with a rubber or plastic hammer while cranking the engine over, if it starts its 1000% fuel pump

its a redneck way to diagnose it
