Default Mirror Mount for Escort Radar Detector Interest

I just finished making a mirror mount for my 8500 x50 and i am looking to see if anyone is interested in one.

They will allow you to mount your 8500 or any escort radar detector to your mirror.

I would imagine they would end up costing about $35 if i can do about 25 of them.

They are made out of aluminum and will have a 1 1/8" hole in the clamp to mount to your mirror. Ill post pictures after i get it installed tonight.

Mounting a radar detector that high is pointless.

Talk to any specialist they will tell you to mount it as low as possible.. while still giving a clear view of the back window.

When you mount it high you wont pick up laser.. which is by far the most important signal to pick up.

    No offence.

    None taken.....

However, relying on a radar detector to protect you from laser will get you in trouble right quick. Laser is usually aimed at the headlight of a vehicle. You will be lucky if you catch a bouncing beam off of another vehicle.

Once your radar detector catches a LIDAR signal you are screwed anyways. Usually the gun will already have mulitple speed readings before you even hit the brake.

For people that use the radar detector for highway mostly (as RCMP still use radar) mounting it high up will cause no ill effect. Also for people in medicine hat, LIDAR is hardly ever used.

Plus its out of the way and it makes for a clean install.

If i was that worried about LIDAR i would buy a jammer......or not speed.

Also, call me crazy but i am sure the rear view mirror will have a clear view of the rear window.....

+1. If your radar detector is picking up laser then it's already too late. Mounting high provides a clean look and great radar range.

Wrong. I have been Lidar'd on many occasions (once doing 30+ over the limit) and have NOT been pulled over because the laser actually bounced off the intended car and was picked up by my detector.

Picking up Ka band is WAY easier than picking up Lidar.. so why focus on the easier of the two? I would rather increase my chance of picking up lidar, that try to pick up Ka band, which has a huge spread anyways. I can pick up Ka band at 1-2km away.

The spread on a lidar is about 3 feet, at max range.. while the lidar pulses the intended vehicle, you cant tell me that one of those pulses wont bounce off in a different direction. That is ignorant.

There is no point to mount it high and have cables in your face
    I mounted it low

I wont have cables in my face. I will be having a thin RJ-11 cable running into the headliner and down through the A-Pillar into the dash to the smartcord display that i disassembled and mounted in my dash.

As i stated Tarrantula that once you get hit with LIDAR its too late. You may strike lucky and get a reflection. But like i stated earlier LIDAR ISNT MY CONCERN. I hardly ever speed in the city, even then its only with the flow of traffic. I get highway tickets so i am focusing on my problem.

With the current mounting of the detector it will not hinder the detection of radar but perhaps even increase it.

If you ask any installer you will hear the same thing from them all. "Low for LIDAR and high for RADAR"

WOW i didnt think this would be derailled into a disscussion on how radar detectors work and where is the best to install them......unless someone changed the topic title on me?

That's luck more than anything, but your argument is fair.

I didnt mean to take the thread off topic, but you are catering only to your needs. You're saying that you are focusing the design "on (my) problem", There are going to be people concerned about picking up lidar aswell. (I am)

You should think about the people who would like a mount that is lower, close to the dash. I would buy one if it was a dash mount, but i wont buy one focusing on radar alone.

Most people that spend the money on a 8500, or a 9500 (like myself) are concerned about Laser aswell. I would have got a cheap one if I didnt. Ka is EASY to pick up.

I am not trying to mass produce these things and start a business off of them. I built a demo by hand and will be having some of my guys at work build them. To run the laser and drill and tap the holes its much more cost effective to make a run of 20-25.

Not to sound like a dick, i dont care about other people. Im not out to make a buck and build something for a certain users.

I made one and was asking if anyone else wanted one. We have many grown ups here that can chose for themselves.

I fold over a piece of duct tape so it acts as 2 sided tape, and stick it to the dash. Stupid suction cups dont work anymore, and the tape can be stuck down a number of times, before it loses its stickyness. Tear it off and put on a new piece.
