Those do seem fairly precariously balanced...

I think its an awesome idea. Looks like it bolts to a hitch, so if you're gonna pull a mini trailer, you'd need the hitch anyways. Way lighter and cheaper than a mini trailer.

If he's got a genuinely well-built rig there and they don't move around and it utilizes a hitch mount, I don't see what's wrong with this. I think it's a great way to bring wheels to the track on a budget. Better than filling the rear seat and the trunk with rubber which tends to get on everything. I've had to do it and this mount is a lot less gayer than a dirty ruined interior. Some people are pretty quick to play the old gay card.

It's called a tire tail. Very popular with tracked Miata's and S2000s

It mounts to the hitch, I haven't heard of any failures involving them, but you are putting a significant amount of tongue weight onto the hitch.

More reason to buy lighter wheels.
many of the guys from CSCC have these, others that don't have the trunk space for the rest of the gear have small trailers ( theirs a couple corvettes around the city.)

It is 200lbs of tongue weight.

    Why is this gay?

I think it is a great idea and you don't have to worry about a trailer.

It's usually the tires that contribute most of the weight. A few lbs per wheel won't make a big difference.

But that's a great idea. I hate driving with trailers attached.

Because it looks like shit, and unless you're driving a del sol transporting 22 inch rims for who knows what kind of retarded reason, you can fit the tires in the car.

    No you can't.

The STi will only fit 1 wheel in the trunk with a jack and you will be lucky to get two wheels in the back seats.

If you don't have a passenger, you can put one on the front seat too, if you don't mind your elbow touching the tire.

    I don't think it's gay....just wouldn't work for everyone out there....

I mean like I mentioned above if you have a rear diffuser (non-OEM) or rear lips or something a hitch mount might not work out so well for you...

I can't fit 4 tires in my car either without having to put one in the passenger seat, which isn't exactly ideal.
The people that care about bringing tires to events, probably aren't the same type of people who care if it looks like shit for the 10 minute drive you have to take to transport them to the track.

If you want to argue function over form, a trailer is a far better idea than this. Unless of course you don't like the way a trailer looks...

It also obscures the license plate. Is it legal to have the plate displayed in the back window in Alberta?

I would just rather go with this over a trailer from a pure cost standpoint. I wouldn't really care if it looks good or not. Really, is a trailer going to look that much better than having a that on the back of your car? Neither look good, and one does the same job for cheaper.
I'm a cheapass, so why do something that costs more when something else can do it just as well for the same price?
