    Default Family vs. Work

    Here's a question/scenario

You have a baby on the way and it's getting pretty close to the delivery date, you have told your employer about this months ago and the expected delivery date

But one day a week ago they tell you they need you to go out of town during those dates and it's bad news for you since you won't be able to be there for the birth of your first child...

    What would you do?

your company should understand if you tell them again.

they might have just forgot, is there anyone else that can go for you?

Child, hands down. Think of how much your wife will hate you for the rest of your life.

If you can't be there for the birth, what's going to make you be there when the child needs it the most in the future?

nope nobody else can go instead of me

and they definitely still remember it's the due date of the baby, since the comment went like this

"Well looks like xxx has been delayed until the end of the month, oh that's the due date too, bad news for you then"

normally i would agree with child hands down, but putting your job at risk (most likely would be let go since i would straight out tell them no i'm not going), in a recession with a baby on the way on the significant other going on EI is going to be tough to swing

    how far out of town?

Nobody else at your work place can cover you? What did you say back to the boss when he said you would be going out of town? Does the boss get that this is important to you?

That is hard. I had my husband sitting by the pager while out of town and ended up being 11 days over-due.

How long before the due date? I would do everything to induce labor before you leave, so you could be there.

It's a tough call do you have family in town that could be there for the wife? How does she feel? It's not like you can just walk away from your job.

The birth will only happen once. What if something bad happened with the baby or new mom? Would you want to be out of town for work?

I definitely wouldn't want to work for a company that would even try something like that. I hope this isn't actually happening to you.

Out of town would be Victoria/Whiterock

Here's the rest of the situation
We don't live in the same city as it is, she lives west of edmonton (30 minutes west) and i live here
her step-dad works in fort mac and will be there for the rest of the month
her mom is going home to the philippines and won't be back until may (funeral and other stuff)
her step-dads' mom will be staying with her

and yes this is happening to me

Tough call. How far away? A couple hours, or a long, long way.
Presuming it's within a couple hours, and that you'll get cell phone coverage, I'd tell my boss fine, but let him know that if your wife goes into labor, you're leaving.

EDIT: Just saw that it's in Victoria. That sucks.
Talk to your boss. Try to see it from his side, but if he's going to force an ultimatum, I'd seriously evaluate whether or not I wanted to work there at all.

boss is a she, you would think she would be understanding

and i've started looking at other jobs already... to be honest this place is crap..
along with this i have 43 hours overtime (time banked) that i was saving for when the baby arrived, but was informed i can't use that for days off and have to leave early everyday for the next 2 months

Would not being there for the birth be worse than not having a job to support said child? Finding another job in this market may be nearly impossible for the next while.

I might think differently if I was a soon to be father as this is indeed a once in a lifetime event, but if it will for sure cost you your job and you don't think you could easily find another one, it might be the best decision for your new family to keep your job.

There's always the chance your wife is early/late and it all works out.

EDIT: I just saw that you do not like this job anyways, so in that case, as long as your confident you can find another one, I'd be out of there.

Child hands down , no questions asked. This is far more important.. If anything was to go wrong , and you were working??? fuck that would not be good.

Take Parental Leave - as per Canadian Federal Law.

What kind of job is it?
And why does your boss suck? Not allowing paternity leave for labor, and not allowing you days off based on lieu for OT?

Sounds like some labor laws are in question here.

Can you take Parental Leave before the Child is born? Otherwise this wouldn't work would it?

    Just curious.
